Re: Williamstown v Northern Blues Saturday Aug 24th

Just watched the game on IQ.

Jones was a stand out when the game was a contest. He did what he does so often at this level, attacked the ball in the air, worked hard, and had an impact. His second half was quiet but they also had players dropping back on him and Willi's midfielders were smart enough to look for other options at times.

I was really happy with Pearce and his lock down role on Garlett. Garlett had no impact and a small defender is something we really need to develop.

Also good to see Jong show some signs his confidence is coming back. He's struggled returning from his broken leg and it would be a real waste if he didn't get another chance next year to show what he can do.

The less said about Howard the better. Disapointing for him to do a hamstring late but I couldn't see him keeping his spot in Williamstown's seniors anyway. The one thing I've noticed of late is he's concious that his kicking is so bad that he tries to avoid kicking the ball at all costs. He got caught on the wing because he wouldn't kick it, stuffed up a gimme goal in the goal square because he wouldn't kick the goal, and kicked into the man on the mark because he was looking to find someone to give the ball off to but had no options. He's gone at season's end, no question.

Stache, would you keep both Jong and Austin in some form next year?
More of an In Bruges guy?

Maybe that's his problem, he knows he's a dead man walking and may have known for awhile

Yeah, I like Jong's attack on the ball - it looks like he has a low centre of gravity and is willing to put his body on the line. Skills will need some work and he seems relatively inexperienced about protecting his body. I will be disappointed if we let this bloke go - he seems to have an appetite for self improvement and giving his absolute best. If he can remain injury free I think he will become a tough little competitor, but his lack of polish probably puts him behind Hrovat.
Should have got a few more frees as well.
That last quarter ( where he went off) was a shocker.
His lack of polish hurts though

Yes, both on the rookie list.

Jong has something to work with, I'm convinced of that. I would have said no to Austin 2 months ago but he's shown enough late to suggest he can offer some depth as a second key defender.

I really liked Greenwood's efforts last year and had hopes for him, but injury and some pretty average form may cost him his spot with Austin's recent good form. It's cut throat being a rookie.

At the end of the day he's just not good enough. I don't think we can highlight one or two things that are holding him back,

How has Howard been the last few weeks (genuine question)? Are Willy going that well that they drop a player after one poor performance that was amplified by a couple of clangers? It's all moot because he's injured anyway.

'stache, I recall you posting comments from BMac stating that Howard was likely to take time, but they're confident he'll become a senior player (or something to that effect). You followed that up by saying you just think BMac was just being conciliatory or keeping up apperances or something similar. Has BMac said a lot in the past to make you think he's a guy that just says things he doesn't mean to be nice?

I don't hold out a lot of confidence for Howard maintaining his spot on the list mind you, though it seems at one point this season the coaching staff have acknowledged he was a player that required a lot of work and perseverence. Any chance for him to be retained at all?
                  TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

That may be a problem Stasche. You can only have 1 third year rookie.

                      It certainly is cut throat.

I'd prefer Austin over Jong. I would sign Jong to the VFL side.

He's gone I think . He would have played when Goodes and Johannisen went down.
Jong and Austin might be retained depending on how deep J. McCartney and Darymple think the draft runs.
I think Austin will still be there being the back up defender.
Very impressed with Pearce's game and agree Jones was great when it counted .
Cordy looks a ruckman, Markovic was he's usual solid self. Roberts was okay and Hrovat's going to be a gem.( tired after half time ) Vez looked in second gear. Talia was as solid as ever ( would have liked to see him on Rowe). Of the non listed players Lambert and Wheeler were standouts

I didn't see him last week in Ballarat but I saw him the week before and it was pretty similar, he tried hard, competed ok at times, and did a couple of courageous things. The problem is his kicking is so bad that he really struggles to do anything effective. I would have him in the bottom couple of kicks at the club, Cross is more effective by foot and makes decisions quicker and Wallis produces less clangers.

I think BMac tries to support players as much possible and boost up their confidence. Given Howard really hasn't shown anything in 4 years, I think slow developer is about the only plattitude at his disposal. An outside mid/wing should have shown something in 4 years, anyone who hasn't is unlikely ever to do so IMO.

I can only think of one player (Vez) who I would delist before him.

I should have added Talia was very good too. He will be a gun AFL defender for a long time.

                                Thanks.

Thought he played some good football last year, particularly in a game where played very well versus Brisbane. Though agree, a player with four years on the list (one cut significantly by injury) should have shown more irrespective of the distance he started behind his peers in terms of development.

I look at out list and have Markovic (Del), Vez (Del), Addison (Del), Cross (Ret) and Gia (Ret) as the immediate players I want to see moved on and I'm finding it hard to make an excuse for kepping Howard as he's seemingly taken a sizeable step back this year.

If the attitude was an issue I'd happily see the back of him, though there's a side of me that thinks a player that has demonstrated a capacity to play well at the top level (albeit briefly) should get four reasonable years at it.
