    Female Umpire

In what is believed to be a first in high level footy in Australia, we had a female umpire in the SANFL last weekend. Jeff Gieschen was on hand as well.

She did a terrific job (has done all year in the reserves) and her "voice" was louder by far then her two male colleagues

I wouldnt be surprised if the AFL takes her under their wing in a few seasons.

An SANFL field umpire, Eleni Glouftsis, is poised to make history on Sunday when she becomes the first female in Australia to officiate a league match.

The 21-year-old will join the league field umpiring panel for the clash between North Adelaide and Glenelg at Prospect Oval.

Glouftsis has worked her way through the ranks of umpiring, beginning in 2006 in the North Eastern Metro Football Association. In 2008, Glouftsis began training at the SANFL as a boundary umpire, changing to field umpiring the following year.

“My parents used to umpire, dad umpired football and mum umpired netball,’’ Glouftsis explained when asked why she took up umpiring.

‘’Umpiring is in my blood, it is extra pocket money, a great way to keep fit and a way to be a part of the game that I love.”

Football is a predominately male-orientated sport but nothing has stopped Glouftsis, it’s the small pieces of advice she has kept with her that have helped along the way.

The fact her partner Dillon Tee is also an umpire has helped with the understanding and commitment which is needed in reaching league level.

“Dad used to always say ‘if it is to be, it’s up to me’, which will always stick with me,’’ Glouftsis said.

“Shane Harris (SANFL State Umpiring Manager) always sends the appointments with the email attachted full of ‘one liners’ and advice but then at the end, he always writes: ‘Enjoy’. This is to make sure that we are umpiring because we enjoy it not because it is our job.”

Harris is particularly pleased with Glouftsis’ rise to league ranks, the experienced umpiring mentor playing a major role in her development.

“What a fantastic achievement it will be for Eleni, she is a real trail-blazer in becoming the first female to officiate as a field umpire in an SANFL league match,’’ SANFL State Umpiring Manager Shane Harris said.

‘’In the toughest discipline of umpiring, Eleni has steadily progressed from junior level to the highest level within South Australia. This is a real credit to Eleni’s commitment and dedication while striving to reach SANFL league level.

‘’The SANFL’s Umpiring Department has marvelled at the manner in which Eleni has developed her knowledge and skills to be elevated to league level. Everyone in the SANFL, including the SANFL’s Umpiring Department, sincerely congratulates her on her achievement.

‘’Hopefully it is the first step toward Eleni being the first female field umpire to officiate in an AFL match.”

Nationally, the appointment of a female field umpire is a milestone in history.

“From a national umpiring perspective, the appointment of Eleni to a SANFL senior match is an amazing achievement,” AFL National Umpiring Manager Jeff Gieschen said.

“We have a strong and clear vision to try and recruit as many females to umpiring as possible. Eleni’s appointment demonstrates that females can make it to the top level in field umpiring. Field umpiring is obviously the most complex discipline of umpiring, therefore for Eleni to reach SANFL senior level this is a testament to her commitment, skill, knowledge, fitness and courage to persevere and have a go.

“I would like to acknowledge the great work done by Shane Harris and his umpire coaches in the SANFL who have guided Eleni to this historic appointment. I wish Eleni all the very best of luck in her career and congratulate her sincerely on this wonderful achievement. Hopefully one day we may see Eleni and Chelsea Roffey (female goal umpire) umpiring in an AFL game together.”

Glouftsis is proud and excited about her achievement of finally living her dream of making it to league level but if you ask her, this is only the first step.

“I am excited and proud about the achievement of league level, I just have to remember that it is just like any other game,” Glouftsis said.

Tragic that it's 2013 and it's only happening now.

The umpiring department is struggling to get participation yet very few females out there involved. (I mean overall)

I wonder what sort of reaction she got from the players and crowd during the game.

Perhaps being a female they would be less likely to abuse her than if it was a male making the decision?

Was really well accepted by the players and the crowd. Everyone (as far as I'm aware) wanted her to do well, which she did. Supposedly she even over ruled a couple of dodgy decisions from her senior colleagues!

Maybe the best marketing tool for umpires ever

Good on her, must have a heap of guts and confidence. We need to see more of the same.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

That's really good with women's football growing as it is hopefully she is the first of many.

I wouldn't count on it. If anything I can see players cranking up the abuse a bit to try and intimidate her.

We had a female umpire for a couple of years and she did a great job.
I believe she has moved onto a league down in Vic.
It did become an minor issue when she umpired against a couple of exes and seemed to favour their opponents.
Could not see this happening at the elite level though.

They could try it, but I'd wager those who do don't understand a heck of a lot about women. (And neither do I, I must admit ).

A gutsy woman like this in what is, let's face it, still considerd (wrongly) a man's job is only going to react to abuse in one way — by sticking to her guns. Most surefire way to guarantee a 50 metre penalty the game would ever have seen.

They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

She was practicing bouncing before the match (and she's fine at it), but sadly with all the rain and mud we have had in rAdelaide this year the centre square was a bog so they all threw it up.

SANFL field umpire Eleni Glouftsis will join the AFL in January after accepting an invite for the national league’s newly established Female Pathway Program.

Glouftsis will relocate to Melbourne next year as she continues to pursue her goal of becoming the AFL’s first female field umpire.

The 22-year-old hit the headlines in August last year when she became the first female to officiate at State League level in Australia, umpiring the SANFL clash between North and Glenelg at Prospect Oval.

Joining VFL field umpire Lucinda Lopes, Glouftsis will be on the AFL umpires’ rookie list but will begin officiating in the VFL next season.

Both Glouftsis and Lopes will be assigned a dedicated coach while also training one night a week with the AFL umpiring panel.

‘’I’m very excited,’’ said Glouftsis, who officiated in her second successive SANFL Reserves Grand Final on Sunday.

‘’I love living in SA but you have to take these sort of chances when you get them. I will do my best to make it to the AFL and hopefully having this pathway will help me in that regard.’’

Glouftsis paid tribute to SANFL Umpiring Manager Shane Harris, who has played a major role in her rapid development in the past two years.

‘’The SANFL, and particularly Shane, have been so supportive with everything,’’ Glouftsis said.

‘’That made my decision a lot easier.’’

Having umpired in three league matches last year, Glouftsis stepped up to officiate in 15 of the 18 minor round matches at league level in season 2014.

And it is this experience which should hold her in good stead once she begins her VFL career in 2015.

‘’Finishing off with this year’s Reserves Grand Final was fantastic,’’ said Glouftsis.

‘’I also really felt more confident about myself in league games so that has set me up to feel confident I can do the job at VFL level as well.’’

Signing a three-year contract, Glouftsis hasn’t lost sight of what she wishes to achieve.

‘’Regardless of whether I am the first (AFL Female Field Umpire) umpiring in the AFL is the ultimate goal,’’ Glouftsis said.

‘’I believe, and Shane (Harris) believes, this is the quickest way to get there – move to Victoria and do my best from there.’’

Harris said the contract offer was a ‘’fantastic opportunity’’ for Glouftsis.

‘’It is a credit to Eleni to be offered this sort of opportunity,’’ said Harris.

‘’It is also a credit to the umpire development and recruitment in this state, resulting in Eleni receiving a solid grounding at league level.

‘’She is very committed and dedicated so I am sure she will continue on her successful path.’’

Glouftsis will be accompanied by her partner, AFL Boundary Umpire Dillon Tee, who will also further his umpiring career.

‘’It will be very beneficial for him because of how many (AFL) games are played in Victoria,’’ Glouftsis said.

‘’We are both looking forward to the move as we think it will be beneficial for both of our umpiring careers.’’

I'm pretty sure she umpired a Foxtel Cup game this year between Western Storm (Tassie) and West Adelaide, and from what I saw, I didn't notice her, so she must have been ok.

Good luck to the 2 ladies.
