Charles Edward Boyles - Unknown VFA/VFL team photo

This is from the National Library Australia
    Charles Edward Boyles 1888-1971, (photographer)
" Charles Boyles was born in 1888 in Merino, N.W. Victoria. He made it his business to be wherever sporting action was going on and as the VFL and Association had no permanent official photographer, became the "unofficial official" VFL photographer. As well as capturing every team and taking portraits and full length photos of the heroes of the day, he also photographed other sporting teams including soccer. Charles Boyles realised very early the appeal of a photograph to people having an outing, and set up a portable studio at St Kilda, with the help of his son he took portraits and printed them for 3d a photo. With the arrival of the American forces in World War II, Charles traveled far and wide photographing American servicemen anxious to have a photograph to send back home. One of his frequent visits was to Ballarat where the Marines were camped, photographing their impromptu baseball games. Charles Boyles died in 1971 "
In regards to the photo donated to the NLA by a family member
"Football players assembled for a team photo in front of a brick wall, full length, front row sitting on ground, middle row seated, back row standing. Players are wearing light coloured guernseys with horizontal stripes, with a man in the middle wearing a uniform "
Would be great to identify some of the players and the year of the photo as its undated , this piece of Club history could then be updated for the NLA archives

It's no photo I've ever seen before. Tomorrow I will look through the old team photos in Unleashed and try and put some names to faces. Is it posed in front of the old John Gent stand?
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I reckon that's Vernon Banbury at the left of the middle row in the long sleeves.

I think the player to the immediate right of the fellow in the uniform is the League's first ever Substitute! It appears as though he is wearing the red vest over his guernsey.

Looking at the mixture of socks in the front row, are we certain this a Footscray team photo and not a sub-amateur team (as all teams were amateur back then).

You could be on the right path as the so call substitute looks like he's wearing a Richmond jumper under the vest.

Or it could be a Richmond jumper underneath a Footscray jumper that's pulled down so the tricolour has accidentally been covered up.

The collar looks to be the same colour as the rest,

Is the white hoop white? The shorts are white.

Re: Charles Edward Boyles - Unknown VFA/VFL team photo

Yes , it is a slightly confusing photo but I think the different jumper designs actually help to narrow down the year

The photo is clearly marked as a Footscray Team , did the photographer come to a training night/day ? Is it actually the reserve side/ local side ? who knows

Is it the 1903 side and the ruckman at the back left 3rd in is Montgarrett and on the far right middle is Dick Hughes and 3rd in from the right middle is the little forward Flewellyn

Its very hard to put names to faces really , I have lists of players from 1903 to 1908 and the Club added players midseason and brought in local players to cover injuries

Surely it can't be as early as 1903 or the photographer would have been only 15 years old! Just going on intuition (hairstyles?) it looks later than that to me, maybe 1920s or even 30s?

But I don't know any of the players, if other people recognise them I have to bow to their superior knowledge.

With the different jumpers and socks I would be thinking it is a training night, the seconds or some sort of rep team.

As Murphy's Lore says the haircuts date it around the depression era. Definitely after WWI I reckon.

Not a lot different hair style to some of today's players.
