    2014 Playing list

Pretty soon we will have to start to put the Footscray playing list together. As we sign players I'll update the list.

Until then feel free to speculate about who we should sign and how we go about building another team

    Footscray Football club 2014 List

    Coach: Chrs Maple

    PLAYERS:

    Jake Calvert
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I think a couple of guys have been signed. I'll have a browse and see if I can find their details.

If Calder don't sign Jayden Foster, he'd be my first pick.

If Luke Mitchell doesn't get picked up.
            James Sellar maybe.
            Markovic captain.
            Cale Morton.
Joel Wilkinson if we think he could improve.
Does VU offer medicine. If so, maybe we could get Tom Swift? That would be a good get.

I love Frankston VFL, but I'd try to raid them. If we can afford re homing some state players, I'd look at some in Tassie.

              JAKE CALVERT
              Height: 192cm, Weight: 93kg, DOB: 30/5/1993
              Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays
I like Calvert. He’s done some very nice things throughout the year and his contested marking has really stood out, which St Kilda needs in the future.
He did play a lot in the ruck for Dandenong outlining his athleticism and he won a lot of the ball for a bloke his size, often having games in the low 20’s for disposals.
I also love the pressure he puts on. Some big blokes just stand there thinking they’re not expected to put pressure on, but he does and he really wants to impact the play in any way.
              71. Carlton – Jake Calvert (195cm forward)

One of the better contested marks running around in the TAC cup at the moment. Not the best athlete but loves to do the bullocking work in the forward line. Hits the contests hard and works hard up the ground to provide an option. Has a solid kick for goal and would be an excellent late pick up. I think he is a very pure footballer.
At 19 Calvert has really came on this year and should be taken at around this mark or earlier. His contested marking is fantastic and he is very accurate when kicking for goal. His skills and ground work are good for someone his size. Can play as a second ruck but I’m not too sure if he will bring that along with him in AFL. Will be interested to see where he goes come draft day.

A couple of write ups. Was on West Coasts list as a rookie.

Shapes as a thinking mans ruckmen who excels at the art of the ‘palm to advantage’. Moves around the park well enough and his second efforts are better than average for a ruckmen insomuch he doesn’t mind the physical nature of the game. Could do with getting a lot more of the footy. Is an ok user of it but will need to get his possession rate up for AFL and learn to use it well.
Another of the talented rucks that abound this year. He was very good last year but maybe hasn’t shown the development many hoped this year. He was the back-up ruck behind Kreuzer at the Champs but didn’t get much game time. He is a reasonable tap ruck and moves pretty well but I think it unlikely that he is going to high possession type. McEvoy got the better of him in the match up at the Champs which is not a fantastic sign. That being said he does have good height and there is enough there to think that he would present good value for someone from the fourth round on. He tailed off toward the end of the year but seems to have fairly good endurance for a ruckman and he works hard around the ground. His disposal needs a lot of work and his below the knees work is not great. If I am his agent though I am sending teams his game against Bendigo where he picked up 40 hit outs, 22 disposals and 12 marks. It is always hard to judge young rucks but Sullivan seems to have the tools to succeed if he can put it all together.

A West Australian, but if he wanted a change of scenery then I think he'd add a point of difference to our overall playing list. He's an outside chance of being rookied by someone.

Blaine Boekhorst from Swan Districts. 20 years old. Plays as an outside mid/wingman. Is tall and quick with good disposal and pace. Slender build, he's a type that we really only have coverage with in Tutt, but Tutt is smaller.

Are we really going to be in the market for delisted players with the Footscray side.

Many of these guys will get better offers for Suburban and Interstae leagues than we would have capacity to pay.

At Footscray they are always going to be behind listed players, so it won't necessarily be a good option for anyone wanting another crack at AFL either.

It's surely going to be a side of players trying to impress us enough to get picked up. I'd imagine the squad players will have a pretty high turnover each year as they audition in this side for a season, and then if they don't get picked up they admit their AFL dream is over and go and make money or play with their mates at a lower level.

Agreed. There will be a couple of needs based players like ruckman but in the main it will be players from the TAC that didn't get drafted either last year or this year or players from smaller competitions that are keen to give the VFL a chance.

They will have to be prepared to add to the Bulldog outfit rather than necessarily be the main players. The upside for them will be playing and training alongside of AFL players.

I think a few, maybe say 3, that won't admit the dream is over. If we didn't get Crameri I would have liked Mitchell. So if he's not picked up, I think he has something to offer.

                          Sellar was a reach, granted.

Marko is a very good VFL player and proven VFL captain. I'd gladly have him.

Morton and Wilkinson fit into the category of highly touted junior on last chance saloon. A couple of these wouldn't hurt IMO.

But I tend to agree with GVGjr, TAC cup left overs if where we should be mining for gold.

I agree with this and it is why there are likely to more graduating from junior football, than those delisted from AFL clubs.

I would certainly support an ex listed player as VFL captain and Marko would be a great fit for that.

Could also be a coaching assistant at that level.
