Re: Footscray v Northern Blues Sunday 20th April

Good write up soupaman. Thank you.

I went down by myself in the end and watched the game from in front on the Whitten Stand, the ball spent a lot of time out on the Hawkins Wing so it was hard to get a gauge on who was doing well in close. General vibe was that we were competitive, lacked any stand out winners on the day and leaked cheap goals which were the difference.

I wanted to see Campbell play a more than solid game. He was good in the last, average the rest. Minson needs a chop out and he is the man to give it. Not getting himself involved enough in the scraps and not presenting a strong marking target. Is he a guy that plays to the level he is at? Last year in the 1sts he grew with each effort.

Honeychurch is next in line for a debut. He gets busy, is physical, has quick hands in close and good foot skills.

Tutt is now in that 'in between' level of VFL/AFL footballer. His burst of speed is elite at both standards. His footy brain is elite at VFL level. Standard at AFL level. With confidence and a definitive role to play he will cement a spot in the Firsts.

Saw Grant watching, I want him back in the squad ASAP. Going to give this Club a lift offensively.

Thanks for the reports everyone, good read.

Glad to see Honeychurch and Tutt keeping their names around the mark for the senior side, and glad to read Dickson kicked a few.

Really disappointed to read about JJ - I wonder if he's not quite recovered mentally from his injury last year, or if he's lacking fitness/confidence, but we're really missing what he was able to provide in the early part of 2013.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I asked the exact same question a few weeks back about JJ and has he recovered mentally. It is something that could play on your mind especially since that type of contact that he experienced is quiet common during a game.

Re: Footscray v Northern Blues Sunday 20th April

Went down myself and won't add too much on top of what has already been said.

Cordy did best when played in the ruck, got a couple of nice clearances there. Didn't take a single mark for the game.

Howard and Fuller are similar players and neither found enough of the ball.

Darley showed glimpses of promise but didn't find enough of it either. Confidence was shot after a terrible error on the goal line gifted the Blues a goal. Looking forward to what he can show next week.

Redpath played well once forward. Kicked 2, had 16 touches and took 9 marks. Was influential.

Greenwood had the grunt role in the centre but came up a little short of having a good game (albeit against good opposition). Just the 16 touches.

JJ was okay but didn't provide any run. Played out of position. 17 touches.

Roberts played well in defence. 17 touches and 8 marks. Is very good in marking contests, just knows where to position himself. His weakness is pace, just not that quick. If he can back his performance up next week he should be in for a promotion.

Tutt took the game on, metres gained would be right up there. As others have mentioned, would have been a complete wingman's game if he finished his chances. 17 touches, 1 goal 2.

Honeychurch runs all day and will have to get an opportunity soon. 27 touches.

            Lower can take a grab!

I liked the work of Nick Jamieson of the Footscray fellas.

Honeychurch I thought was brilliant, this kid has it.
He was everywhere at one stage I heard brock
Macleans dad say who's that 22 he won't play next week, leather poisoning and a broken foot, he got it that much.
I was in the stand and by the third quarter you could hear supporters say "Mitch" every time he got it.

Don't forget that JJ hardly had a preseason and spent the majority of his time in the rehab group. Not an excuse but may be a reason as to why he is struggling to get into the season.

                    Just a few statistical notes

Honeychurch 27 disposals, 1.1 goal and 7 tackles. Complete game for a 19 year old.
Dickson 15 disposals, 5 goals, 3 tackles. Is a chance.
Tutt 17 disposals 1.2 goals - Apparently provided great run.
Campbell got 14 Disposals, 1 goal and 45 hit outs. Big numbers but reportedly not that impressive.

A good summary. I know it is hard to compare VFL with AFL but I thought both Roberts and Austin looked better as tall defenders than both Williams and Talia yesterday. Dickson did well to kick 5 but you worry about his lack of pace at AFL level. Hunter although he didn't play yesterday looks a better option. Honeychurch as you said was terrific and a great pick up at 60 in the draft. Redpath looked good yesterday and looked a lot fitter and does come into reckoning as a big forward option. Both Howard and Fuller look limited as senior players. Tutt's pace is something that we lack overall at AFL level. I would like to see Campbell elevated to support Minson and provides a tall target up forward. JJ is playing without confidence after his extended break due to injury last year but he has shown that his superior pace and good disposal can still be valuable assets as a senior player.

No, he copped a knock on his shoulder late last week. Was sitting in the stands, no arm in sling he just said it didn't come up.
