Re: Port Melbourne V Footscray Round 10
Just caught up on the game via iview.
Wowee, can we just put the VFL side in the AFL? It's not just how they're playing, but how they look to be enjoying their footy, and enjoying playing together. They boomed out the club song like I haven't heard it in a long time, and I love the idea that the coach is talking about Bulldog spirit at three quarter time, only for the players to respond with a 22 point last quarter win. They're playing for the jumper!
Cordy and Campbell are forming a fearsome ruck combination. When they're each given a large amount of ruck time like they were yesterday, it really is great to watch them. I get the feeling that they're being earmarked to together take over from Big Will, when the time comes. Cordy's marking around the ground was great, would have taken 4 contested marks. Just needs to boot it long rather than kicking into the man on the mark.
Stringer showed that he could be a really good impact clearance player at AFL level. It was impressive how he was flying for his marks as well. Has a bit of brutish James Hird about him, at least in terms of how he should divide his time between forward and midfield.
Honeychurch is just a little ripper. Like others, I've had reservations over how we can fit all of Hunter, Hrovat, Dahlhaus and Honeychurch in the senior side long term, as small players. If all of them can run through the midfield when needed, and kick goals forward, I don't see why the can't all co-exist. They're just good players, all of them. Mitch has to be tested at AFL level, but he seems to have the same kind of terrier attitude to Liam Picken, and on that basis he's going to make it. Unleash TRIPLE H (Hrovat, Hunter, Honeychurch)!
I saw a few plays from Matty Fuller that excited me. When I first saw him I thought he was a very similar player to Christian Howard but now I'm not so sure. He seems to have more balance than Christian, and probably has more potential as a defensive player. If he can consistently beat his man and have 15 meaningful touches going forward (like I think he did yesterday, stats tbc) then he deserves a senior opportunity to do the same thing.
Fletcher Roberts continues to look impressive at VFL level. Here's hoping he can make the step up with the next opportunity he gets.
Redpath's goal kicking consistency has been remarkable but he's not banging the door down. He's a very important part of the Footscray side at the moment and if he can keep this form for the remainder of the year, regardless of whether he gets an upgrade before the year is out, he probably demands a spot on the regular list for next year.
I'll look forward to walking across to Vic Park next week for some more good Bulldogs form.
