    Darley improving with defend-first mentality

    see video here: http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/ne...irst-mentality

Two-way running is an important part of being a small defender and Development Coach Ashley Hansen believes Sam Darley has the natural attributes to be a proficient member of the back six.

Traded to the Bulldogs in the 2013 offseason, the 21-year-old has pace and foot skills to burn and after beginning his career at the GWS Giants is determined to progress his football.

“His foot skills can be really reliable and his attacking flair off half back,” Hansen said.

“He’s a small defender that has the speed to go with the small forwards which is really important and then we’ve tried to build his game around those two fundamentals.”

When he first arrived at the kennel, the defensive component to his game became a key focus and the coaches worked closely with Darley to better himself in that area.

The benefits of his hard work are now starting to show in games, with the 21-year-old increasingly winning his position and naturally opting for a defence-first mindset.

“He’s starting to win his one-on-ones more regularly than not, which is really important for a defender because we want them to focus on defending first,” he said.

“But then his ability to run and carry the ball off the half back line or deep in defence and use the ball for us going forward offensively is really important.”

Adding a more defensive side to complement his natural outside run is helping Darley make an impact on game day and become a more well-rounded player.

“He’s [Darley] starting to get the nice balance between defending but then getting involved offensively when he gets the opportunity to do so,” Hansen said.

“He’s starting to get more of a rounded game which is really impressive.”

Hansen said if he continues to show commitment and professionalism in regards to his football then he could have a long career at the Bulldogs ahead of him.

“He’s giving himself the best chance to be the best player that he can be and hopefully a long term player at this football Club,” he said.

      I don't get it.

Good to hear Darley is doing well, we need a couple of HBF'ers to come on.
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

Looks promising on what I've seen.
Can see him getting a game shortly

Sorry if I was cryptic. That aside, I just find reading some of these puff pieces tedious. If Darley has reliability, attacking flair, serious pace and foot skills to burn at age 21 then he should be in the seniors. Since he hasn't played AFL this year with all these much needed attributes, then I maybe feel that I'm being fed manure.

We've got a young, quick, half back flanker with good kicking skills and our priority is to turn him into a defence first player. I think I'm going to be sick.

I'll hold your hair and heels if you hold mine Ricky.

Imagine how good Chad Wingard would be with us, none of talent ouzing into general play, or marking, or goals, or excitement, nup.

We'd knock all that attacking flair out of him. Half a season playing as a shutdown run with would see to that.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

In a world of infinite dimensions where I get to coach the team for a game, I tell all our actually talented kids to go nuts and encourage attack and flair. We talk about what Cal and Harbrow would add if not for fake plastic teams, Harbrow would be in the twos until he learns to defend and Cal would because of size and speed would be a good chance at being our number one tagger.

                    Thought exactly the same thing.

Funny thing is, we still can't defend anyway.

I think a balance has to be struck between defense and flair.
Folk on here would be crying blue murder if he didn't defend in a senior game.

If there is a knock on Harbrow it is his defending at times.
Be interested to see how he goes if the plastics make the eight.

That's the irony of it all. We're crushing any flair or creativity our kids have in the pursuit of defence, but we can't defend. So we end up with what we see on the weekend, players caught between defending and creating, but not being able to do either.
