Re: Highlights of Yarraville v Waverley VFA Second division VFA Preliminary final 1980
They had a cool guernsey, Yarraville. Very 70's. The Eagle looked like it should've been emblazoned on the bonnet of a Camaro or something... I also noticed one of the Waverley supporters sporting a Templeton 31 Footscray guernsey.. Took me by surprise, just a bit! Kept thinking he was in the wrong huddle...
Quick, unrelated question, was Yarraville Oval not the smallest ground in the VFA? If not the smallest, surely it was a close second? -

Thinking back, Northcote's ground was pretty small but Yarraville's ground is tiny.
Funny to think it was Footscray's home ground during WWII.They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.Comment

He played his first 8 games as an 18 year old whilst we were at Yarraville in '42, and didn't play his 9th until he was 22 due to serving during WW2.
Footscray played 7 games at Yarraville Oval in 1942, winning 5 with a percentage of 131%. We obviously played it well. Crowds averaged 8,500 and we finished 4th in 1942. Probably our second best season in the VFL to that point. It was a pretty successful little stay.Comment

Re: Highlights of Yarraville v Waverley VFA Second division VFA Preliminary final 1980
Waverley, hey? Interesting (minor) fact was that Sunshine were known as the Panthers upon joining the VFA, but had to switch when they discovered that Waverley had taken up the same nickname in the same year. Thus the switch to "the Crows".
Sunshine also wore Geelong guernseys, but due to Moorabbin wearing royal blue and white hoops, switched to the Melbourne FC design instead. (With white instead of red, of course).
They also had to move from their ground at Selwyn Park upon joining the VFA. The Sunshine Council agreed to build them Skinner Reserve in Braybrook. (Sunshine was packed with sporting clubs, so they had quite the task on their hands to accommodate them all.) Then, upon news of this new stadium in Sunshine (or more accurately, Braybrook) the Footscray Footy Club slipped in and made an application to take up residency. This was around the time of St Kilda moving to Moorabbin and North to Coburg - so it was all the rage. (Such is the "group think" or "herd mentality" of VFL/AFL clubs.)
With yet another club just adding to their headache, the Sunshine Council knocked Footscray FC back. Otherwise it could've been a very different history for Footscray Football Club.
Ironically, Moorabbin were out of the VFA not long after Sunshine's admission, St Kilda's move killed them off as a VFA club. I think Caulfield then came in and took on the hooped guernseys..
But Sunshine had changed their nickname, guernsey and ground to join the VFA!.. And only lasted 25 odd years thereafter.Comment

I recall playing against Sunshine the first round of the following season when we kicked 52 goals. I actually felt sorry for them that day. I kicked 10 goals that day but not surprisingly everyone remembers that Paul Angelis kicked 23!!!I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.Comment

In the game against Yarraville that year the Sunshine fullback got reported by the umpire for pulling pulling his shorts down and flashing a browneye. He got half a season at the tribunal hearing extended to life for throwing an ashtray at the tribunal president during the hearing.
What number are you wearing for Waverley? They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.Comment

I was wearing number 45 in my first year at the club. There is a very fleeting glimpse of me in the foreground earlier in the video but it's really brief.I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.Comment

I have to say Webby you have really great general knowledge not only of our club but of the old VFA. As a young Doggies supporter it's great to read some people insights on it who were around in those days."Footscray people are incredible people; so humble. I'm just so happy - ecstatic"Comment
