BULLDOGS IN FOCUS | Tom Young | Second, but best

      Tom Young.

If you had told me at the start of the year that I’d be playing twos for most of 2014, I would have been a very disappointed young man.
Footscray was tipped to come dead last, and I was definitely one who thought we would struggle to win in our first year.
A new team with a group of blokes who would rather be playing senior footy combining with part-time VFL footballers doesn’t sound like an environment that would evoke too much care and passion.

    How wrong I was.

Historically, all AFL-owned VFL sides have finished near the bottom in their maiden years. Yet what has occurred in the Footscray Football Club in the past 20 weeks has been remarkable.

It is something I have been searching for as a player and person.
Contrary to all predictions, the sons of the west are sitting second on the ladder and on the verge of playing finals.
The camaraderie formed in such a short time is something I’ve never before experienced – and a lot of that is due to the VFL boys.

We’re really looking forward to the next five weeks and the finals. Hopefully, we can bring some silverware to the club.

This year has exceeded all my expectations and rekindled my love of the game.
VFL or not, I have loved playing footy with a great bunch of blokes this year.

Hopefully Footscray can make a deep run and make the GF. Will be awesome experience for some of our young guys and also give our coaches a look at who can perform when the heat is on.

Great to hear Tommy is loving his footy. I'm well and truly a fan and believe he will be a very successfull AFL player for us.

It's great that Tom is enjoying his footy. No matter what level you play at, it's always good to win.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I hope this feeling being built is why Macca is keeping some of the younger blokes playing together in the VFL. Developing some chemistry between each other and building that natural feel for each other's games.

They really got the mix right at VFL level. The senior blokes Lower, Prismall, Marko and Russell have driven standards which have complemented not only the development of the AFL listed youngsters but also the VFL lads.

The club should be commended for this initiative and hopefully we have some silverware at the end of the season to go with it.

I said something similar in the Match Committee thread. Talia, Roberts and Young are likely going to have to be able to form a combination fairly quickly with Morris and Murphy near the end. I wonder if their development is going to be as a combination as well as individual development?

Cordy and Campbell will be interesting to watch. Neither is ready to take over from Minno straight away bu we can't keep them both in the VFL indefinitely if they are to come in as a combination when Minno gives it away, which wont be that far away as will turns 30 next year.

Totally right Slim. Lower in particular is just a brilliant person, a fantastic addition to our club, and I hope he gets the recognition he deserves.

For the people that attend the odd training session.
Do the VFL side including the part timers train with the AFL side or do they do their own thing.

I wouldn't underestimate the effect Jordan Russell has had on the group also, has been outstanding with the young defensive group.

Agreed, top bloke to have at the club - was pretty sad to hear when he was told about his delisting, but stoked that he elected to go around in the VFL.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?
