    The Recruit

So it has been decided how the winner of the Recruit will be drafted: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/af...-1227035795306

Who here has been watching the often infuriating show?

Who is sceptical about any of their abiltiies to make it?

Who wants us to draft one or more of them?

Who thinks this shows in part why Voss was a bad AFL coach?

And who thinks Ben Dixon pretending to be some tough guy and giving them sprays for not "stomping on their throats" a bit hypocritical and pathetic?

    --------------------------------------

I'm sceptical about most of their ability. The"footballers" surely can't be that good seeing as they haven't been picked up at state level.

Having said that I think the leading candidates to win are Wagner, Maxwell and Moreland.

Semmel and Jackal are too old and too dime a dozen.

The Irish bloke could be a smokey.

Smith could be a chance to be picked up as a raw athlete, but only as a rookie.

Goss will need a few tricks to make it, and they haven't really shown enough gameplay to judge that.

Wagner always looks awesome, although most of his highlights involve him receiving a handball in the goalsquare which does leave me sceptical.

Maxwell looks a good prospect, but is 24 I think so potentially a bit old as an athletic recruit,

Moreland reminds me of Stringer, and looks to be a good rangy midfielder.

I haven't seen any of it as I don't have foxtel.

Can you expand on your Voss comments?

To me he just seems one of those old fashioned "give 110% all the time and if you don't I will punish you" types. I can see why some of the younger guys wanted to bail.

Really enjoying it. It's become somewhat of a tradition in our house. I reckon Vossy has done a pretty good job as far as the theatrical side of it goes. It's a shame they don't show broad results in the various tests, generally just the best and the worst performers, that side of things is really interesting. It's got it's flaws but its a damn entertaining show I reckon.

        Dixon is incredibly annoying though.

Completely agree with your assessment on the potential winners too. It can really only be one of the three.

I've been watching it and it reeks of setup reality tv which is what it is.

I doubt any of the players will get anywhere in the long run. I can see Morlo going to St.Kilda if he wins, likes to party.

So how does it work? I assume if the player looks reasonable he's automatically allocated to Collingwood, and if he looks like a gun it's Sydney? Surely the AFL won't let a marketing opportunity like this to go to a non-worthy club, it'll be one of their love children.

I enjoy watching it because it's something completely different from everything else on TV these days. At least, for AFL footy.

Dixon annoys the hell out of me and I don't like the psychologist either - she tries to act important but does SFA. I don't mind Vossy on it but it's clear his communication skills aren't great. Obviously has a good footy brain and knows what it takes.

I've played against Moreland in my younger days. Good player but I wouldn't have thought he'd be able to cut it at the top level. My bets would be on Wagner (by some way), followed by Goss (if he works hard) with Maxwell the dark horse.

You would imagine whoever the winner is would pick a club from their home town should one nominate.

Wagner is from SA and a good chance to win, so you would imagine he would pick one of those clubs.

I'd imagine most Victorian guys would pick a club like Collingwood or Geelong with good developmental pathways, although going for a younger crapper side like St.Kilda or Melbourne could be better for career longevity and chances of actually getting promoted off the rookie list.

There was an image of Jackal (the hairy one) in a Bulldogs jumper as a child, so he could potentially pick us if it all works out. The issue there is that he is an undersized, averagely skilled inside mid type who is 25ish. But he does seem to have good character so who knows.

Maybe not. As an example look at Lincoln Mc Carthy (who?). Has completed two seasons at Geelong and barely tied his boots on without geTting a new injury. Has played 3 or 4 afl matches without showing much. Recently re signed for another 2 years at Geelong based on future ability mainly

Example b. Nathan stark was also taken from Glenelg the same year, was rookied at Melbourne. Allegedly they tried to develop his body too fast, had an injury wrecked season as well, and was cut after one miserable year as a rookie. If the players positions had been swapped who knows what would have happened.

Personally I'd be going for a club with a strong developmental pathway like the Bulldogs or Geelong. Somewhere where you know they are going to commit to you and bring you through their culture. If the recruit picks Melbourne then they have wasted the power given to them, but some guys might just be tempted by the prospect of playing AFL sooner rather than later.

                      **SPOILER ALERT**

In a special draft being held by the AFL for the TV series #TheRecruit, Johann Wagner, Brady Foster and Chris Moreland have made the top three.

AFL clubs will either bid or pass on any of the three recruits, of which the winner will ultimately win an AFL category B rookie contract.

Should the winner receive multiple offers from different clubs, he will be able to choose which club he wishes to play for, adding another element of suspense to the show.

The Final episode screens next week on Fox 8 - where the winner will be announced.

Can you see any of the top three at your club? Or is there a delisted player from the show you think will earn a contract at this years National or Rookie drafts?

Not convinced about any of them except maybe the Irishman that missed the top three. He showed a lot of grit and improved rapidly.

Wagner looks talented but something seems nqr with him to me.

                            Re: The Recruit

Wagner looks the most talented, but as a 190cm forward he doesn't fill a need for us. Other clubs may be interested but the back injury he suffered in a car accident may go against him.

Foster and the delisted Irishman may be worth a go as project ruckmen. I wouldn't be against giving the Irishman a contract since he won't take up a normal rookie spot and is only 20-21 from memory. Foster is around 25 I think but is as raw as Padraig having never played footy until recently, so age is against him.

Moreland is a run of the mill midfielder. Seems a good guy but not sure he would make the grade, endurance seems his only outstanding quality.

                              Pretty good summary Axe man.

Wagner is the most obviously talented from the limited footage we have seen, and you would think would be the most likely to win. I

For us, if we were to pick up any of them I would like the Irishman as another ruck option.

It would be interesting to see how they actually went in that reserves match because we haven't been given an opportunity to measure how good they are against state level players, just against eachother.
