McEvoy to play this week for Box Hill

Not too happy with this decision. The fact that the GM of the VFL can say who does and who doesn't play (rule 20.8) is ridiculous. He didn't qualify by playing enough games, he doesn't play - simple really.

Probably gets me angry cause it takes me back to Collo and him sticking his nose into something to rob Granty of his Brownlow.

Absolutely stinks, now the VFL administration is a joke.

Lets play Griffen this week, or Libba - no bloody different they all don't qualify.

Is there a single skerrick of integrity anywhere in this whole competition? Pathetic.

Also what about Suckling and Shoenmakers getting a practice game in the Young Guns match?? Just making it up as they go along...

Re: McEvoy to play this week for Box Hill

I've no problem with McEvoy playing this week. His team is still in the finals race, it's only due to good performance they're not playing this week, and he played VFL the week before based on form. It's hardly as if they're stacking their reserves.

There's actually rules at the top level of cricket that state if a player plays reserves while their seniors are playing finals then that player is obviously there on form, therefore even if their seniors get eliminated they're still eligible to play reserves. It's a good rule and I agree with it.

How does that make any sense at all? Our seniors aren't playing finals and neither of those players played VFL the week before because they didn't get picked in the seniors. The only similarity I can see between McEvoy and Griffen is that they're both males that play football.

            Not really fair for Williamstown.

What if instead of McEvoy it was Cyril Rioli?

ie coming back from injury needs game time to hopefully make the prelim or gf, hasn't played a game all year for Box Hill but the VFL let him play?
Rioli could single handedly win that game, how would that be fair?

So you can see how the rule is i place to stop this sort of thing but to let it slide i think just draws a line through that rule.

Perhaps the rules should be changed, but not in the middle of a season. Under the rules McEvoy doesn't qualify

Playing an ineligible player in a final is an automatic forfeit in most competitions. Let Box Hill play all the Hawks players who need match fitness, but automatically award the win to Williamstown - everyone wins.

Is this the current rule? That if your team is still in the finals, they can play VFL finals regardless of number of games played? If so - nothing can be done now, but the rules really should be changed because it makes the 'games needed to qualify' rule irrelevant. It should be one rule or the other - you can't have both.

I'm only going by hearsay, but it seems because Hawthorn earned the week off it's being viewed by Williamstown as them not playing finals this week. I don't agree at all as it would seem farcical that he could play this week if Hawthorn lost last week, but because they won he can't play. I've got no problem with not needing to qualify by games played if your seniors are playing finals. No AFL team is going to stack a reserves team to try to pinch a VFL flag, so therefore he's obviously playing VFL on form. If your seniors aren't playing finals then the games qualified rule is the only reasonable measure. I think the two working symbiotically.

I am with Grey on this one.
McEvoy was fit to play last week but wasn't selected. They could play Ceglar, who is eligible, but he has been chosen in the senior side (I know last week).

I could only see an issue if they chose to play both McEvoy and Ceglar.

Hawks are still playing so it is ok IMHO. It's not as if they are being forced to play a final at the oppositions home ground even though they finished higher on the ladder.........

Cyril is actually qualified to play VFL finals regardless as he hasn't played an AFL game since July 1.

Whether you agree with the decision or not - it is a further demonstration that the VFL (now) exists to be an AFL development league.

We played Lachie Hunter in the first final against Willy when he was ineligible.

And McEvoy played the first final ineligble aswell.

As Grey said it's obviously the fact Hawthorn have a week off which is causing the issue. History shows, and as we are well and truly aware, the week off is a HUGE advantage come the prelim. No team is going to drop a few players back to the VFL for the week to lesson that advantage.
