    RIP Malcolm Fraser.

Former PM Malcolm Fraser passed away this morning. Condolences to his family.

I met Fraser once at the Whitten Oval. As he was descending the stairs of the Gent stand I walked up and asked if he wanted to vote in the Footscray cheer squads most popular player prize, a dollar a vote. I managed to fleece him for twenty bucks for the cheer squad!
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

RIP. They say these things come in threes, so if I was an ex-PM i'd be getting a health check.

Proof that no matter where you were ideologically in your own mind at any given time, that it's ok with life experience to stand against everything you once thought. I liked that about him.

Condolences to his friends and family.

No matter your politics, he was a true statesman and in his latter years had a very balanced view of life.

At uni in the 80s I had a friend who always maintained, 'Malcolm Fraser is a nice man.' Boy, did we hang it on her at the time…

But it turns out she was right. A true humanitarian, compassionate, and a statesman. Very sad to hear this news today.

Admire him for sticking to principles over partly loyalty later in life.

I wish more modern politicians could/would do the same

I wouldn't describe myself a being a big fan of either Latham or Fraser. I'm not super familiar with Latham's current writings/opinions now either apart from calling Kevin Rudd evil.

To my knowledge he might occasionally criticise Labor but is still largely in line with their policies and identifies as a Labor voter, as opposed to Fraser who seemed to completely distance himself from the Liberal party. To my knowledge there aren't many former leaders who've gone that far.

Fraser quit the Liberal party in 2009.

He was a man of two halves (so to speak)
The second half was better than the first.

Yes. Claimed it was no longer a liberal party but had become a conservative party.

I hated him for his role in Whitlam's dismissal then admired him in his later years. I was lucky to meet him at Tammy's and his open garden on the Peninsula. I chanced upon him briefly by himself and asked if I could ask a personal question. He agreed so I said you had a busy life in politics and then you were busy with charity work; how do you manage your personal energy? He replied that he doesn't worry about it, that the energy comes from what you're interested in.
