Re: RIP Malcolm Fraser.
I wouldn't describe myself a being a big fan of either Latham or Fraser. I'm not super familiar with Latham's current writings/opinions now either apart from calling Kevin Rudd evil.
To my knowledge he might occasionally criticise Labor but is still largely in line with their policies and identifies as a Labor voter, as opposed to Fraser who seemed to completely distance himself from the Liberal party. To my knowledge there aren't many former leaders who've gone that far.
Safe to say Latham had, in fact, distanced himself from Labor. So question is, do you admire Latham for having the ‘bravery’ to depart from his ideologies in the manner that Malcolm Fraser did?
Or is it simply that you’re left leaning and admired someone on the right for flipping to your way of seeing things?
(Kind of a rhetorical question.)Comment

Funny being prompted to look back on this one a few years later!

Fraser didn't 'flip' or depart from his ideologies. He was consistent in his views rather than following the party line of the day. Latham either changed his views later in life or hid them when he was a part of Labor. But sure, the fact that his views aren't reprehensible helps me to find that admirable (eg if an old person stuck to the idea that races should be segregated I'd not find that so great). Fraser only 'flipped' from being a member of the party. We'd have not seen eye to eye on most issues.

Re: RIP Malcolm Fraser.
God knows why we had even stayed, it was all academic, we were getting abused and spat on and the boys were getting thrashed. I cant even remember why on earth we sitting in the Huggins stand, every other time I remember going to Moorabbin we stood at the opposite end.
But then Neil Cordy takes a mark in the goal square in the first minute of the last quarter, plays on and kicks the goal and we were never going to lose from that stage. They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.Comment

Re: RIP Malcolm Fraser.
Ian Williams from the boundary with the late winner and Trevor Barker pleading with the goal umpire that he'd touched it and getting angrier and angrier when the umpire signaled a goal. Me and my mates going off our heads screaming and yelling that we'd won until we realised that we were the only Footscray supporters in the whole stand and everyone else had turned around or otherwise adjusted their line of sight to glare at us. We didn't care, we were 45 points behind when Beazer kicked that goal just before 3/4 time to make the difference 39 points at the break.

Re: RIP Malcolm Fraser.
That was the one that got us within a goal IIRC. Then Possum Williams gets the free and converts from miles out to put us in front.
Chris Hansen was a decent player but his real value to us was that Fitzroy threw Peter Foster in as steak knives to get his deal over the line. They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.Comment
