    Veggie Patch

    Any budding greenthumbs out there?

I have dug a little patch and have had 3 seasons (2 summer, 1 winter) of vegetable crops with some decent success (tomatoes, zucchinis & squash very good, cauliflower and broccoli so so, carrots & beans not so much).

Just wondering if anyone is getting their winter crop ready and if so what are they planting?

    Hi Mofra
I'm a full time gardener with a passion for veges gardens.
I didn't plant much at all the winter. Got some carrots, onions and lettuce going at the moment. I don't have a lot of room.
Not a fan of cauli, broccoli, silver beet, etc but have planted thenm in the past.
Usually Fennell and snow peas but been lazy.

Ask RawToast about fruit trees(probably veges as well), living in Ascot Vale he might have got fruit fly?

ES, thanks for the reply, not too much room where we are for a fruit tree - living in Kensington so we have had the fruit tree army come 'round to tie yellow ribbons on our trees. It's either for fruit fly or my trees are supporting a charity.

Either way, beetroot goes well during winter? Roasted fresh beetroot is something I've only been a relatively recent convert too, thanks to Eat It on RRR.

Snow peas go well during winter as well? Will give them a go, planted them last year for the summer crop, ended up eating most of them fresh off the vine because I couldn't wait to cook them.

I'd love to put in a vege patch... can someone tell me if it will just become Possum food though?
Our place is ground zero for the critters... and last year when I put my bonsai on the back verandah and left it out by accident overnight.. it immediately became possum fodder.....

So I'm loathe to plant a vegie patch just to become their local supermarket.

Possums are territorial so you have one family of possums. If any others come into their designated area thats when you hear the barney.

If you keep them happy with a apple or whatever they'll leave your new shoots alone.

Mofra - snow peas are easy in winter. Silver beet is ok for winter but I don't think Beetroot is.
With root veges use a high Potassium rather than a high Nitrogen based fertilizer as N promotes leaf instead of root growth.

YHF - Try Netting, Mesh, physical deterrents(foil, fake cats), or spray/liquids (one goes with the great name of Poss off)

My dad used to grow water melons and use a jar full of water with a needle poking into watermelon attached to string going into jar, used to double the size of the watermelon in a day!

Did he ever try using vodka? I assume the water soaks into the fruit via the string as well as the roots.

I was wrong about beetroots. They will work this time of year.

No vodka, come on he had 3 kids eating it too lol.
Dunno bout the roots but gee it made them huge, also had trouble picking them up, they were so full of water.
I also think there was a timing to it as well because they would fall apart if you put too much in them.
Bit of a suck it and see experience about it, but once you did it a few times you became an expert .

                        G'Day Mofra,

Just to let you know that i love my Vegie patch and I have things all year around.

I like to grow the "Not normal" if you are keen, try the attached link.

                        TheDiggersClub@diggers.com.au

Currently I have lettuce, Broccoli Beetroot, Parsnips, Fennel and Garlic.

Let me know what your thoughts are of Diggers I think the fruit & vegies are out of this world as they are all the old heirloom varieties.

Try the Tigeralla Tomatoes and the Australian butternut pumpkin you will not believe the flavor.
                        BB.

Looking forward - Naughton, Darcy and JUH. It will be the envy of everyone.

Thanks for the tip Sockeye. I think the family of possums must have some fierce competition, and I think the prize is the Mango tree on my neighbours fenceline, that conveniently borders right where my carport is... Our roof is Possum freeway at night time as use it to mosey over to the Mango tree, and then come back with their bounty.... It seems the return trip is where it all gets ugly.. and loud....

Cheers Ernie. I think I'll give the mesh a go.... but failing that how could I go past a product called Poss Off!
