Australian Women That Paved The Way

After listening to the podcast from Double J about the Top 50 Game Changing Women in Aussie music, I thought about those that really paved the way for the current list of artists.

Backed on to the thread I did a while back https://www.woof.net.au/forum/showth...ght=Australian here are the list of Australian women I believe paved the way.

** Remember, I was born in the late 60s so the 80s Australian music pub scene really was my bread and butter and shapes this list accordingly.
    1. Chrissie Amphlett - the queen of Aussie rock ... say no more
    2. Renee Geyer - more 70s than 80s, but worked a lot with Sting as backing vocals as well as a great solo career
    3. Kate Ceberano - what a voice. A strong, confident artist that had a solo career, was lead singer for I'm Talking, and backing vocals for the Models
    4. Deborah Conway - Lead singer of Do-Re-Mi and a solo career. Her song Man Overboard with lyrics about pubic hair on her pillow ... I remember the Countdown interview with Molly. She was very controversial for her time and such an amazing artist.
    5. Suze de Marchi - lead singer of the Baby Animals ... the ultimate rock chick (and I mean that in the most endearing way possible). She was absolutely awesome live.

I also want to mention Sia here ... although she was after my (prime) time, she really has knocked down doors internationally.

Special mentions to Jessica Mauboy, Tina Arena, The Chantoozies, and Adalita (Magic Dirt). All magnificent artists in their own right but not in my top 5

So, how did I do? Who did I miss?

Does Helen Reddy count with her iconic song?

She most certainly does ... but she was before my time. I have never seen her live, only on video.

Vika and Linda Bull - great backup singers for JoJo Zep, Paul Kelly and have produced their own songs as well.

Like her or not Kylie Minogue has probably sold more records than the rest of the list combined.

Over the years many work colleagues went to her concerts and I never heard one complaint
She's probably not a great singer but I don't think there can be many questions on her ability to entertain

Judith Durham from the Seekers found international stardom when nobody new about Australia

Helen Reddy made it big time & her legacy lives on

Marcia Hines & Delilah came from USA but stayed & made important contributions

Kylie Minogue for modern pop culture

Cheetah - little known pop duo of the 70's but were great session performers or back up singers (check out Stevie Wright concert at the Opera House in 78, The girls were on back up vocals. Prominent in Evie part ii, I think that's Malcom Young on guitar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPveBD6WWXc

So many girls prominent in stage and theatre. Debbie Byrne was brilliant in Les Miserables, Marina Prior in Les Mis & Phantom, so many others. Our girls are world class in this field.

Check out Melbourne's women of soul recordings. Gobsmacking some of that stuff
