History. It's a way of selling the history of an area or a building or something without people saying "but I hate history/what's the point of history?"

For instance Fisher's ghost isn't about a ghost sitting on a bridge. It's about Fisher's murder.

Well that’s misleading! I paid to see a ghost on a bridge not hear about some pointless story. You’re telling me all these ghost tours are a sham and we’ll never see any ghosts!?

In all seriousness, I never expect to see a ghost on these tours. I’m fairly selective as I do enjoy the history of the places but also the small adrenaline kick you get out of it. I don’t really like the ones that are purely theatrical or jump out at you for cheap thrills. Those are akin to having chips served under a parma. It’s the subtleness that I like. Same with horror movies.

I don't think that I've ever been on a ghost tour now that I think about it. I've been on lots of history tours though.

Nothing against BAD and his removed appendix, but I reckon the removal of yours would be well and truly more ridiculous if the story was told in full.
