I hope you don't throw metal metre rulers at the students like my Grade Four teacher did to us.

OUCH! Never actually seen a metal metre ruler... only ever wood. That would hurt! Actually, funny story - I'm in a wheelchair, and today on my way to the staffroom for morning tea, one of the kids was sitting on the ground, and put her hand down, in front of me, right as I went past... you guessed it, straight over the fingers! She was very brave, too!

Careful you might get sued for planning it, hope she wasnt a coloured child and you teach in America!

I see no problem with the skit, Michael Jackson was coloured and as a child had an Afro if you take off anyone you do like to look like them to exaggerate it a bit because its a "comedy" act!

In no way i find it offensive but because he has just passed away was just bad luck, as they were only bought back because they were on it sooo many years ago.

          Re: Hey Hey its Saturday!

Americans find anything to do with black people extremely racist because they were so horrendous to them for so long. Now anything to do with making fun of them is seen as terrible. Blackface is stupid but this was really overblown.

Problem is it wasnt making fun of Michael because he was black, his colour was not made fun of at all.
It was just a play up on his music and the way he looked as in the hair and the music , the black colour was put on so they looked like him as was the wig, if they went on stage without the black it would be even more ridiculous because he was black!.

Its just attention seeking, why dont Americans be positive and look at it for what it is a comedy act which recognizes a great artist!

Funny if you look at Saturday night live they do it all the time and its one of the most popular American shows ever!
Next time they take off Obama in a joke i wonder if they will say oh thats racist??
Its not racist, its a take off of the character they are , i couldnt care less about the colour we are all equal!

Maybe we can pull out an old skit from Saturday night live on our own Steve Irwin I am sure their is one and then kick up a stink and say its racist?

Because Michael wanted to be white apparently.

Now that is quite funny according to the media Michael wanted to be white so doesnt that make him racist if it is true?

Don't agree, the act had nothing to do with turn of the century blackface. This was an impersonation of the Jacksons, full stop. There was nothing racists, said, her acted out.

That is my point. I wouldn't go so far as to call it racist, but it was not in good taste - period. But that aside, this sort of show and 'entertainment' is long dead, noone was wacthing the tired and boring show when it was cancelled a decade ago!! It is just not funny anymore!!! And why it was dredged up is beyond me. Puppeteers and organ/silent cinema was great once upon a time, but just leave it in the past - where it belongs. Everything has a use-by date and HHIS is long dead!!! Trying to make something funny from 30 years ago funny in a new age with new values and expectations isn't the best move. Specifically, it was cringeworthy and tacky, not funny in the slightest and is the example of why some things should be left to their place in history. I don't care what the yanks have got to say, at best it was bad taste and channel 9 and Darryl ought to have known better. I find the best of HHIS funny as it was filmed at a point in time many moons ago and i can recall fond memories of the 1980's. But trying to copy 30 year old material now is cheap, tasteless, tacky, unimaginative, opportunistic and a very bad idea as society had moved on. It's time Darryl and channel 9 did too.

                          Re: Hey Hey its Saturday!

I read this on the weekend, as I wanted to try and understand what it is about it that they find so offensive - to me it was a straight impersonation, and I'd never known the definition of 'minstrel'

It very much changed my perspective on it - though when saying this to my wife, she replied 'But how were they to know the history of this in the US?'

I don't for a minute believe it was intended racially - but the US view it as a racial caricature which is demeaning. At least Daryl apologised - it's a shame, to me it was like a perfect storm of bad luck - you have an American on the panel, and us without knowledge of US racist theatre comedy that originated over 100 years ago - I'm annoyed it's gotten this far, there doesn't seem to be any middle ground in the argument - I get that offense has been taken, but they too have to look at both the big picture (i.e the intentions of the skit was not to portray negatively and apology) and their own backyard. I love a show like Family Guy, but the amount of racially motivated one-liners in that feature in the show....

Though I have to admit, I'm still surprised they went with it - remember Sam Newman painting his face black when Nicky Winmar didn't show up on TFS? We all know how well that went down.
