    ...Or can it?

There are these three kids in Singapore (and it was all over the news when I was in Singapore a few years back when the third one was born) whose dad is a nuclear physicist or the like at the national university, and he's named his kids:

    Nuclear, Hydrogen and Atom.

At least Atom sounds like Astro Boy.

I work with a Chinese guy called Martin.

Years ago when he was working at another company his workmate still couldn't remember his (Chinese) name after being told it about 200 times, so he simply said, "I think I'll call you Martin".

      So Martin it is.

The funny thing about the situation, I always thought, was that usually your name is 'imposed' on you by your parents, but in this case, you get to pick your own name, which can lead to some interesting choices.

Now, and I kid you not, I once had a weird little kid from Hong Kong in my architectural theory class that I was teaching, and the 'Western' name she had chosen for herself was, get this, 'ANAKIN SKYWALKER'. (No, really.) Please note that 'Skywalker' in this case WASN'T to be her last name (it was Wong), so Anakin Skywalker was actually like a two-word first name (ie. Anakin Skywalker Wong)

Now, apart from the fact that:

          (a.) it's a guy's name, and
(b.) the guy turned out to be Darth Vader ie. the biggest badass in the galaxy,

the funniest thing about the situation was actually that she didn't want to be called 'Anakin' or 'Annie' or anything like that. It had to be the full 'Anakin Skywalker' or she wouldn't respond. I thought for weeks that she was taking the piss, but six years later and she's (from all reports) exactly the same, I'm just convinced she's nuts (she is).

          Now that can't be beat.
          That's good...so bad, it's good.

True about the international students. Have met many an Asian student named Henry, Vincent, George, Anthony etc...

Had a high school friend who is Cambodian. Decided in Yr 8 that he wanted to be called Estabon (a character from an animated TV show he liked!). Convinced every teacher that was his "middle" name, and that he preferred that. Used to crack me up that he got away with it until leaving halfway through Yr 10!

When I was teaching in Aboriginal Communities in the far north WA ... the best name I came across was Yerticle Fazeldean ... There's a name you don't forget easily

Funny story from my school. Happened the year I started there. The music teacher at the time had a tendency to mix students up when writing reports, or to forget them altogether. One teacher, playing funny buggers, told him he'd forgotten one of his students, the now famous (at our school!) and completely fictional "Morris Yandel". Ian, the music teacher, then went and wrote a report for Morris, and submitted it to the assistant principal for proofreading!

Great hilarity ensued, and it's still talked about to this day!

When I was at Footscray High and MASH was at it's peak we convinced an emergency techer that we had a student called 'Tuttle' who was absent that day, we repeated the pattern until Tuttle(Tutts to his mates) got onto the official role. He was a badass that Tuttle-he never came to class
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

We have a programmer in the office who hails from China.

There are three x's in his first name so he goes by the name of Zero

There he is in the Office Directory as Zero Wang
