It's disgraceful, but until the Australian sporting public get onboard they won't ever be paid more. I actually think the free-to-air channels should be forced to show as much women's sport as men's. So to bid on AFL, they'd have to have the equivalent hours in women's sport lined up.

      I like that idea.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

While in principle it is a great idea, unfortunately it would simply reduce the amount they are prepared to pay for the rights. It is commercially driven.

Women only get equal coverage when they are involved in sport alongside men in tennis and athletics.

The equality of pay only occurs in tennis because the WTA was strong enough to get it through despite them having a lesser audience and lesser work load.

As far as the Matildas are concerned we are dealing with a semi professional group, who still play basically for the sport. While I agree that they should be vastly better remunerated for what they have achieved, it won't happen until they generate better revenues themselves.

It's an interesting parallel with the big vs small football clubs in a way… give them greater exposure and familiarity and the interest will follow? Isn't that what we always argue when we're pleading for WB to get Friday night games and blockbusters? does the same hold true for women's sport?

It is a perplexing issue, but it is different (in my view) to the exposure within the same competition.

Obviously exposure creates interest creates revenue.
Thus it becomes a marketing issue and how those sports can obtain the exposure.

That's predicated on the idea that more money is better for sport. I'd argue that less money coming into sport isn't necessarily a bad thing. It would limit the hold broadcasters and and advertisers have on sport for a start. Pie in the eye stuff, I know, but we should probably prepare ourselves for the thought that sport won't always be awash with the amount of money it is now. It can't constantly grow.
