    Re: England limited overs tour

Did anyone catch the Ben Stokes' dismissal in the Aussie win last night? Was given out obstructing the field after sticking his hand out and knocking away a Starc run out attempt while he was sprawling over to evade the throw. I've got no problem at all with the dismissal on replay, sticking out his hand like that look pretty deliberate to me

I just saw the dismissal. I tend to think he was a bit unlucky because I think it's more reflex related than knowingly trying to block the throw.

Yay and nay. I think it was instinctive, but equally the result was to prevent the run out. Good decision I think. One thing to get your body between the stumps and the ball - basic u12 stuff- another though to reach out and stop the ball. Unlucky and pivotal.

          Re: England limited overs tour

I just watched the full replay on the cricket Australia website. It sounded like the third umpire was initially wanting Hawk Eye to see to path of the ball?? But I can live that, he would've probably been run out and made a hand movement to stop the ball. Unlucky perhaps, but right. Although if Wade didn't appeal so strong I don't think Starc or anyone else would've appealed.

            Re: England limited overs tour

I have watched the replay and Stokes has clearly put his hand up to stop the ball, which probably would have had him run out if not for his action.

This is definitely an illegal action and as such there should be no controvesy.

            Rules must be enforced.

Also David Warner will apparently miss at least the first test of the Bangladesh tour with a fractured thumb. Will be a brand new opening combination

How is this even controversial.....we were taught from under 12s that when you are batting if you touch the ball with your hand to prevent a possible dismissal you are out "Obstructing the field" or "Handled the ball". In fact it is bordering on cheating, especially if it is deliberate.

I don't think it was deliberate by Stokes, but only he would know if it was - but that is irrelevant (like the handball rule in soccer).

Handling the ball and obstructing the field are two different laws, for obstructing the field the law states it must be "willful" and not while "trying to avoid injury". I think the action was deliberate, even if a relatively automatic reaction

Here is rule 37: "Either batsman is out Obstructing the field if he wilfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action. In particular, but not solely, it shall be regarded as obstruction and either batsman will be out Obstructing the field if while the ball is in play and after the striker has completed the act of playing the ball, as defined in Law 33.1, he wilfully strikes the ball with (i) a hand not holding the bat, unless this is in order to avoid injury. See also Law 33.2 (Not out Handled the ball). (ii) any other part of his person or with his bat. See also Law 34 (Hit the ball twice). "

Have they named the touring team yet?

I don't think the first test is till November so it will be at least a few weeks.

Also with Watson, Warner and Coulter-Nile out of the squad the selectors have brought in Finch, Handscomb and Hastings. Vics do it better!

                        Re: England limited overs tour

I saw the replay (I haven't bothered watching the matches) and am a bit undecided about Stokes. At full speed it looked like the ball was coming straight at him and he put his hand up to protect himself. Slow motion makes it look like he stuck his hand out away from his body to stop the ball but it was accentuated because he was falling away which made it look like the ball was tailing away from him. I'm not convinced it was deliberate so it's borderline whether it should've been given out or not.

Yeah I would have given him the benefit of the doubt that he was protecting himself from being injured

So Warners injury is a 7 weeker?
