I guess he was told he would never be picked again.

I think it's the final recognition that his injuries and form just can't guarantee him a spot anymore. His injury last night was probably the final straw.

Great news. He's never been to the standard and his walking out after homework-gate showed little regard and many previous supporters were strong on him. Like him in one dayers, but being honest he is somewhere from unfulfilled talent to average at best in the test arena. It's going to be a new era with the nucleus of the boys club gone from the test change room. Perhaps we can just go back to working hard and performing well as a foundation for selection.

So he chooses the day Warner gets injured and a slight glimmer of hope is offered to him?

Given Warner and Rogers are both gone and his record as Test opener would be superior to any other candidate?

Now, presumably, it'll be left to 3 youngsters to make up the top order.

May not have got the gig anyway but very ordinary timing to refuse to help out if required.

            Alot of unfilled potential.

I disagree with this logic. The more likely scenario is that he has learned that even with the Rogers and Clarke retirements and the Warner injury he wasn't in the mix to tour Bangladesh. Top that with his injury and it's probably the best to announce it now.

From what he could've been, unfulfilled at test level for me. Lazy and/or arrogant shot selection, refusal to address LBW issues, review hog, poor leadership, at a core of a team rift and generally made runs when it didn't matter. Injuries hampered him for sure, but that list of things were things he could've addressed to achieve a higher career output in test match cricket.

There was only one coach that tried to address this with Watson and a few of the other boys. Under Boof it's been allowed to thrive.

So the same day Warner gets injured, Watson is informed he is no longer required?

Given the timing that seems considerably less likely to me.

This is what Bevo is teaching me. Having fun, enjoying the environment and all the trimmings of fame doesn't need to happen at the expense of a ruthless pursuit of excellence and winning. A good coach balances the carrot and the stick, and as you point out, Boof doesn't seem to have that in him to an extent.

Warner and Watson got injured in the same game. I don't think we tell players they are no longer required but I think Watson was probably made aware that he wasn't an option for the tour to Bangladesh.
It's a good decision he has made.

                          I agree it's a good decision.

Warner's injury is probably the bigger deal.

Looks like a completely fresh top order now.

I wonder if Cowan gets a recall as a bit of stability.

Something like Cowan/Burns/Khawaja/Smith as a top order next test.

Unfulfilled talent, and didn't work hard enough on his glaring weaknesses .
Also carried to much access for my liking

Although he hasn't been good enough at test level for the last few years - he did win the ab medal and the test player of the year about 4 years ago. I think the calls of never being test standard and an unfulfilled talent are a fraction harsh.
