The captain doesn't necessarily have to be the best player for his spot, unless it's #3-you always go with the most talented batsman at 3, because more so than most games the captain of a cricket team can make a huge difference out on the field. He has to be able to read the game, understand what's coming up and have a plan for it.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

That list doesn't exactly inspire confidence but cricket isn't a game where you make the best player captain and hope for the best. We've done that with the last two appointments and they have been disasters as captains. It's time we picked a captain to be the captain and not as a reward for the most talented player. From what I can see that man is Cam White.
