    Re: The Ashes 2017/18

Paine is a strange one at first glance but Wade and Nevill had ample opportunities the last month to mount a case with bat and gloves and both simply didn't deliver. Paine is essentially same age as Nevill and a little older than Wade, who has been putrid with the bat for a year now (been better with the gloves to be fair). If Paine is considered the best gloveman of the 3 then that's a fair enough call (if very marginal).

Renshaw is horribly out of form and is replaced like for like by someone in red hot form - fair enough call I reckon, and Renshaw will be back once he can address his technical issues outside off stump.

Shaun Marsh is a Marsh - that's all the selectors need to know. If the last 3 shield matches carried so much weight, then why wasn't Ferguson in the conversation? He's younger, in the test team recently and scored a mountain more runs in the long form. His papers appear to be stamped after a run out in Hobart last summer. Maxwell as the incumbent also hasn't done a hell of a lot wrong other than to not go on with some solid starts. And Cartwright averages 50 in 1st class cricket but a couple of untimely failures and all of a sudden he can't bat - probably more unlucky than anyone not to be there at #6, and he's also the only one who can trundle a few medium-fast to give the pacemen a chop out.

To be fair to the selectors, nobody really put their hand up in 3 shield matches to demand a spot and plenty actually harmed their own chances through poor form. Was a very difficult team to select.

I’m speechless . Bancroft yes, but Paine and Shaun Marsh ?
I’d heard that at least Shaun can marry the Aussie selectors now

Great article by Geoff Lawson on the selection of Marsh and Paine. Read here

My conclusion is Shaun Marsh is a cat, the man with 9 lives and while I don't have anything bad to say about Tim Paine clearly there was some collusion between the state coach of Tasmania and a selector who was at the game but never entered the club rooms to give him every opportunity to post a good score with the bat albeit it against part time bowlers. George Bailey as captain was overruled on a declaration. If I was the captain I would resign from that position.

You have to accept there is an element of it being a development league, like the VFL. He's helped a teammate achieve national selection
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

His current keeper was the incumbent and he wouldn't have known that Paine making runs against part timer bowlers was going to get him the job. I don't think George saw it that way either, he wanted the chance to bowl Victoria out and gain a much needed win.

Good article from Lawson, couldn't agree with him any more.

Shaun Marsh under an injury club with a tight back. Warner not 100% as well so Maxwell is on standby.

                      Re: The Ashes 2017/18

Ohhhh! An Ashes series starts tomorrow. For an Australian it's just about the pinnacle of team sport. A test cricket series against England.

I always look forward to the first session of an Aahes series, it's better than any other sports experience (apart from your team winning a grand final!) and often sets the tone for the series so both teams are extra keen to get on top.

I can't wait. I haven't been this keen for a match to start since September thirty last year. Come on Australia.

I'm a great believer that you win the toss, you think about bowling first, you talk to the bowlers about what they think you should do and then you decide to bat.

Runs on the board are the most valuable thing in cricket.

I think wickets play a big part.

Some stats to keep any eye on in the calendar year.

Smith 888 runs (112 over 4 innings to get 1,000 again) & Warner 786 runs (214 over 4 innings to get 1,000 again). Not much other than them yet again.

Lyon, highest wicket taker this calendar year, 57 at 22.10. With two tests to come. Would be huge to finish as the top international wicket taker in 2017, conceivably a good chance to notch 70 wickets in a calendar year.

What's the most wickets in a calendar year BT? They are outstanding figures for a finger spinner but it's not surprising because Lyon is an outstanding finger spinner.
