Re: The Ashes: Test 1, The Gabba

Nah it was this one.Here we go, the original 'Steven Smith' thread;

Some interesting comments all based on Smith's role at the time as the team's spinner. Nobody mentions his batting. As a matter of interest does anyone know what his first class batting average was when he came into the team? I wouldn't mind knowing what it was and if the selectors long term plans revolved around him as a batsman or a bowler.

Even in that it's all about him being a spinner and but giving him time to develop his game properlyComment

But as was pointed out at the time, he had a first class batting average of 44. That's higher than Bancroft and Handscombe for instance.

He was hardly everything that's wrong with Australian cricket. It was just irrational the criticism he received from some people.Western Bulldogs: We exist to win premiershipsComment

Re: The Ashes: Test 1, The Gabba

He batted at 8 & 9 in that match. He clearly was not picked as a batsman or even an all-rounder. It was just a decision that left everyone confused as to what direction we were going.

That era was a pretty bad time overall.Comment

At least now selection decisions are logical and clearly reward good performances.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]Comment
