    My Sports Commentators Soapbox

Tony Jones - Lets get right to the point, you're a talentless hack who somehow survives in the clown show that is Channel 9 sporting coverage.
As a sports commentator for the evening news your job is to read scripted lines and despite all the years you have been doing it you're barely adequate at it.
Somehow you have carved out a long, but clearly not a distinguished, career at CH9 who as a network can't be setting the standards very high with their sports presenters.
You host the Sunday Football show which is a lighthearted bordering on, but falling short of, comedy show where clearly the panel of sporting experts have little to no respect for you.
Once again this is highly scripted before it goes to air and you're frequently the brunt of the panels cracks at you.
All that is fine, the evening sports reports you just have to read off what others write for you Mike Moore style.
For the footy show it doesn't really matter if you com off looking like a fool because at best it's a sports show/comedy show hybrid that no one takes seriously.
Perhaps this all appeals to people with a strong Australian sense of humor.

For some reason though, which is beyond me, CH9 see fit to have you not only host but also provide unscripted comments on international sports.
This is where it all goes pair shaped because you're knowledge of sport is poor and rarely insightful but you also aren't relatable to many people following the coverage.
This summer you have referred to Kohli, who is one of the all time greatest batsman as a bully, the emerging tennis player in Collins as a brat and quite possibly the greatest tennis player of all time in Djokovic as a hack.
And for good measure you also showed a lot of disrespect to the Serbian Nation.

When it goes a bit pear shaped you try to explain it as your Aussie Humor and offer up a halfhearted apology. I'm surprised that CH9 allow this but maybe it gets them some extra rating points.
International sports like Tennis don't need hosts trying to steal the headlines from the players. Just stick to the script in front of you and don't try to ad lib.
You have zero credibility for your sporting knowledge and I doubt you would know the difference between a football and a boob because you have probably never touched either.

I hope Ch9 come to their senses and give Jones a fitting farewell.

Cricky, that's a fair bake for a show nobody watches. Re: Kohli. I don't know about bully, if that's a reference to the Melbourne Test 'bump' on Konstas, everyone around me laughed. He'd have played Union !

The problem is when he is calling International sports.
I don't really care what he says on the Sunday Footy Show because I rarely watch it, but for some reason this summer he's gone on an attention seeking crusade and it's backfiring.
Non sports playing commentators like McAvaney and Whateley might on occasions get a bit ahead of themselves with their commentating but they are exceptionally well researched, versatile with their ability to call different events, professional and show a high level of respect to the sports men and women who participate.
They would never be disrespectful to a sports persons Nationality.
Jones on the other hand on his best day is just a figure head. He never shares any interesting facts or makes insightful comments about how the sports people are performing in the heat of a game because he has little to no knowledge of the sport.

Happy for anyone to talk me down from this soapbox.

I'd struggle to think of a modern sports commentator to praise. Somebody who is doing it for the love of broadcasting, rather than just to feed their own ego and profile. Certainly nobody in AFL/Australian sports commentary comes to mind.

I've got about 3 others I want to call out but I want to give this one some time to breathe.

I'd really be interested to hear who people have on their radars.

I've got a couple for you but this is a soapbox not an awards night
Adam White doesn't get the praise he deserves and always seems to be so relatable because he provides a level of detail from an almost supporters perspective.
Adam Collins is a brilliant cricket commentator and exhibits no arrogance and his cricket knowledge is quite interesting.
Andrew Voss is a brilliant commentator

He's an arrogant tosser. Glad that he's been called out as a fake performer.

The best sports commentators are on the ABC. I enjoy the way they call AFL, Crocket and many sports. Channel nine are still the boys club and Jones should have been taken off the air after his stupid mocking on Serbian Fans and Novak.

I think for shear knowledge and research McAvaney gets my vote , his recall of numbers and times is very good ,( Olympics , Football , Horse Racing ).

McAvaney turned into a dreadful AFL commentator with a penchant for sexualising the indigenous and being a sycophant to stars of the game, no matter how abhorrent their behaviour.

James Brayshaw needs to get his hands on a bag of gear and head to Wet on Wellington for an evening to figure things out. I'm OK with man love in the commentary box, but his barely closeted fascination with big men is a touch weird in prime time.

There's a lot of things to dislike about Brian Taylor, but my latest with him is his constant attempts to gaslight viewers about whether there are any spare seats in the house........mate - it's not radio, we can ****en see the bunching of spare ****en seats - so give it a rest!

Outside of that, everyone else is fairly mediocre but largely inoffensive.
                          TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

I am a huge Adam White fan. He was a major loss to RSN and the reason I stopped listening to their breakfast show.

He has landed on his feet with SEN.
More of an In Bruges guy?
