Cricket Australia set to sign $1 billion deal with Foxtel and Seven West Media

    Link

Cricket Australia is poised to sign a $1 billon plus broadcast deal with Foxtel and Seven West Media, beating out incumbent partners Network Ten and Nine Entertainment.

As revealed by The Australian Financial Review on Thursday night, Foxtel is underpinning the new deal, and Ten and Seven were locked in battle to be the Murdoch-owned subscription service's free-to-air partner. Nine had dropped out earlier on Thursday, not want to spend more and having secured Tennis Australia's rights last month.

Sources said a deal with Foxtel and Seven could be announced as soon as Friday.

Under the terms of the deal Seven gain rights to all home Test matches and some of the Twenty20 Big Bash League, while Foxtel would have rights to broadcast every ball bowled, including simulcasting what is on free-to-air.

It's understood to be a six-year deal, worth around $180 million per year, or $1.08 billion over the length of the contract. Foxtel will pay around $100 million, while Seven will pay close to $80 million, contra included.

The landmark decision from Cricket Australia to put a huge chunk of its sport behind a paywall will see limited-overs international matches, both 50 over and Twenty20 forms, taken off free-to-air television for the first time in 40 years.

International limited overs cricket involving the Australian team played locally is on the anti-siphoning list, which dictates the sports free-to-air networks have first rights to bid on it. Foxtel needed a free-to-air partner in order to do a deal, but there is a question regarding 50 over and Twenty20 international matches moving exclusively onto pay TV.

    Landmark changes to cricket broadcasting
BBL started behind a paywall on Foxtel, but under the last five-year contract with Network Ten experienced exponential growth in popularity.

Ten chief executive Paul Anderson said, in a statement, the CBS-owned network is disappointed its bid for cricket television rights was rejected.

"Network Ten turned the Big Bash League into the television phenomenon it is today and one of the most popular sports in Australia, a sport that all Australians were able enjoy for free," Mr Anderson said.

"We had planned to extend that innovation to other forms of the game. Network Ten and our BBL team led by David Barham revolutionised the way cricket is broadcast in Australia and attracted new, younger viewers to the game. At the same time, we invested heavily in the Women's Big Bash League, broadcasting matches in prime time for the first time and raising its profile significantly. We are proud of everything we achieved with the BBL and WBBL," he said.

Sources said Cricket Australia will be able to announce the deal is worth at least $1 billion.

It would be a revolution in cricket broadcasting not seen since Kerry Packer's then Nine took rights during the World Series Cricket era of the late 1970s.

Nine recently won the rights to tennis broadcasting after the 2019 Australian Open, previously broadcast by Seven.

    Sad.

In no way is having more cricket siphoned off free to air a good result for the health of the game.

For all the talk about what's wrong with English cricket, I'd say the biggest factor is not having had live international cricket on free to air TV since 2005.

Kids aren't playing or talking about a game they can't see on TV - and limited overs was meant to be a real driver for kids under 12.

As long as they play test matches on FTA I don't really mind.

It's almost like 9 are saying "we have big problems with our cricket broadcast nd instead of trying to fix them we will just have a go at cricket instead.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

They got the tennis which clashes with cricket.

So that means that test match cricket and the Big Bash will still be on FTA? I'm cool with that. It depends on a couple of things.

1/does that include overseas test series like the Ashes
2/will the WBBL actually be on the telly or will they try and get away with streaming most of the womens' league like they did last year.

This is a terrible decision. The UK lost FTA cricket just after the 2005 Ashes, a point when the game was at its height of popularity in the modern era. Tiny venues mean that most people can't get in to watch the game here, so TV was the main medium it reached out to audiences. Post pay wall it meant that you needed at £40 pm, £500 per year to watch it. Interest in the sport has declined. Grass roots participation is down - the grab for cash is killingniff the game.

The best outcome of this would be for those pricks at Ch7 to lose the FTA footy rights when they are next up because they've over-committed to the cricket.

Really disappointed to hear the cricket will be more heavily behind the paywall of Fox.
And really disappointed at the prospect of the BBL not being on TEN. The TEN team of Howie, Junior, Punter, Fleming, Gilly etc - were just outstanding and played a huge part in building the brand. It’s hard to imagine 7 and Fox doing a good enough job at it.

As for the Tests and Channel 9. Plenty bag the 9 commentators and coverage - I can understand some of it. But suspect it won’t seem to have been bad at all once 7 takes over.

I'm not the biggest Howie fan but he did a superb job calling the BBL and Damien Fleming has become a superb ball by ball commentator.

I have eternal faith in the combined talents of Hame, Basil, BT, Lingy and JB to fark up the crcket as effectively as they destroy the footy coverage.

Ch 10 raised the bar with their BBL coverage - CA too smart by half with their negotiations and have gone for the cash injection over the smarter play of aligning with ch 10 to grow all elements of the game. Going behind the paywall has killed the ECB since 2005 and it will do the same to CA.

Fairly good summary of the in's and out's.

Further proof that Sutherland has no idea and is in way over his head.

We’ll be begging for Tubby, Heals & Chappelli after one Test match of JB & Hame.

Surely Lingy and BT get nowhere near the cricket coverage. That would be hilarious.

I hope they hold Foxtel to the anti siphoning laws and insist the ODIs and T20s go on FTA.

So to split the relationship up, Cricket Australia chose to make their consortium bid “non-compliant”.
