Second test - Australia v India, Perth

India take a handy 1-0 lead into Perth after winning a test in which both sides were a fair way below their best. Pujara was clearly the difference in Adelaide – his ability to bat time and soak pressure was the platform that built both Indian totals.

The spotlight is still brightly on that Australian batting unit. We saw some spits and spurts of good form, but the lack of partnerships (except from the tail) is a big concern. We were lucky to get as close as we did.

Aus XI: 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Marcus Harris, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Shaun Marsh, 5 Peter Handscomb, 6 Travis Head, 7 Tim Paine (capt & wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh Hazlewood

Australia go in unchanged. You'd imagine there are a few players in the last chance saloon who need a good performance - Finch, Marsh, Handscomb, Paine and Starc would all be looking over there shoulders...a pretty fair assessment of where this team's at when nearly half of it could find themselves out come Boxing Day.

Likely Indian XI: 1 M Vijay, 2 KL Rahul, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt) 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Hanuma Vihari, 7 Rishabh Pant (wk), 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Jasprit Bumrah

Two forced changes with Rohit Sharma and Ashwin out - you'd imagine it'll be like for like with the Indians looking at middle order bat Vihari and handy left-arm tweaker Jadeja.

The big talking point has been the deck. It looks green and it looks fast. This is a must-win test for Australia, and that's the kind of wicket they'll be looking forward to.

Australia have won the toss and will bat. This could be a disaster, they need to make sure India's bowlers toil all day in the heat.

India going with 4 quicks with Yadav replacing Ashwin. Off spinning all rounder Vihari comes in to bat at 6.

I can't see Paine being under any pressure for his spot in the short term, regardless of his personal performance. The others you have mentioned will come under pressure if they fail again.

Yadav is an interesting pick. Don't think he brings anything that Shami/Bumrah doesn't already.

I would've gone for the spinner or Kumar who is your genuine swing/seam bowler.

None for 57 thus far. Surprised at there being no wickets yet (watch as they collapse in response to my words)

100 partnership up, Harris 50 in his second test. Wicket a car park, India putting in an all rounder instead of a spinner looking a bad choice right now

And Finch out LBW after his 50. Hopefully Khwaja and whoever's at 4 can build on this start

Khawaja and Handscomb just look out of sorts and their inability to rotate the strike invites pressure.
Just when we looked to be stabilising with Marsh and Head, Marsh does what he does best, finds a way to get out when set.
Head looked promising, but he is not good at controlling the ball on the offisde, and again when set, picked out the deep third man to a wide ball.
Will be vital that we get 320 to 350, and given we've not passed 300 in 12 innings that might be seen as an improvement.

A lot of good starts not taken advantage of however there was also some examples of brilliance by the Indian players at times

Have to be better of turning scores of 40 or 50 into something more substantial

Its such a shame, and for mine symptomatic of our long format problems, that there isnt any more first class games scheduled til late February!

With batting spots on the line, this would be the time some guys could really put their hand up for selection....
Instead we'll probably see selectors bring blokes in who are killing it in the BBL, and that is just almost a completely different sport, and form in it does not equate to Test Match suitability.

I think it’s a decent score on that wicket . Looks a bit MCG mid 80’s too me

No doubt the wicket produced some 'get out' deliveries every now and then, but Marsh and Head were set and just produced 'get out' shots. We could've been in a truly commanding position had they kept their heads and kept the scoreboard ticking over til the new ball came.
I look forward to seeing how we bowl. Should suit Cummins, and Hazlewood in particular. And if their part time spinner Vihari can produce the odd wicket ball, Lyon must be licking his lips.

Is anyone else enjoying Rishabh Pant's sledging as much as I am? Now that's how you sledge, no abuse, no threats of violence just a little idea planted in the batsman's head to be thinking about the next time Ishant thunders one down at you?

                          It's real test match cricket.

We went overboard with sledging in the past. I hope we get back to that type of sledging.

I played cricket until I was well into my 40s. I sledged a lot (it's what you do when you can't keep up physically with the 20 year olds, you put ideas in their head) but I took pride in never abusing anyone.

The best one I ever copped was when we were 8 for going into the last hour (20 overs until stumps) and me and one of the tail had batted for over an hour already trying to save the game. We batted another 15 or so overs and we were nearly there when I heard first slip say to second slip "have a look at Dicko. What is he trying to do while the bowler is running in, I've never seen anybody do that before" (Dicko was fielding at short leg) They got me, I was more worried about trying to see what Dicko was doing than concentrating on what I was doing and I was on my way back to the sheds by the end of the over.

After the game the umpire came over and said "Great back to the wall innings son but they got ya. I so much wanted to stop the bowler and tell you to refocus but at least you've learned a lesson today"
