He has made 4 test centuries which seems a fair return when he has an average of 38 but if you look a bit deeper 2 have been against NZ, 1 against WI and 1 against SL.

Cricket Australia schedule Shield games before the tests as a way of identifying the right mix of player but as you say it all comes to nothing when someone like Burns is likely to be selected with something like 50 runs for 10 innings.
Harris has scored runs at the Shield level this year but apparently is a long shot to make the starting 11

Selection is a punt so lets hope we back a winner

I'm no Marcus Harris fan - he is the patron saint of stylish 20's followed by marshmallow soft dismissals - but his pretty good Shield form in the lead up to the 1st test demands selection ahead of Burns. Actually any Shield opener that is currently fit and not concussed demands a cap ahead of Burns, so pitifully is he out of form.

I'm glad that my first test watching experience after being away last summer and the one before is backed by sensible Australian first team selection. Can always count on these guys to set a solid baseline.
