    Ashes 2021 - 2nd Test December 16th to 20th - Adelaide Oval

Who comes in, if Hazelwood not fit?

Former Australian Test captain Mark Taylor says Jhye Richardson would be unlucky to be overlooked for the second Ashes Test if Josh Hazlewood does not recover from a minor side strain in time for the pink-ball clash.

A Cricket Australia spokesman said on Sunday a decision on whether Hazlewood takes the field in Adelaide on Thursday had not yet been made, with the Australians expected to have their main training session on Tuesday.
    If Warner not fit?

CA officials are confident opener David Warner will take his spot in Adelaide but he may have to play through pain, having been hit in the ribs by a Ben Stokes’ short ball at the Gabba. He has severe bruising and did not bat in Australia’s brief second innings. However, he will keen to face nemesis Stuart Broad, who is likely to return, having been rested in Brisbane. Usman Khawaja, overlooked in Brisbane with Travis Head winning the middle-order berth, will travel with the team to Adelaide and is the most likely candidate to replace Warner, should that be needed. Selectors would also have the option of looking outside the squad..

Richardson as good as confirmed and Khawaja the most likely choice of Warner doesn't come up.
There was some talk today of Renshaw being in the mix.

David Warner to play second Ashes Test after Australian opener declared fit

      • Batter to play despite showing signs of discomfort in nets
      • Jyhe Richardson replaces Josh Hazlewood as expected

            For discussion purposes Gary.
You've been fairly keen over past 12 months on giving Neser a crack. He's certainly, from a form perspective deserved consideration.
I do wonder though whether he should only be a real consideration in an emergency given his age. He's 32?
Starc and Hazelwood are 31 and 30 respectively. I think we've got to have an eye towards the next 5-7 years.
For me, Jhye Richardson has form and years on his side to be next cab off the rank.

Based on his Shield performances and even his form against the Lions he should have played by now. He's also closer to a like for like replacement for Hazlewood than anybody else but maybe go in with a more attacking bowling line-up might suit us.
While I agree that bringing in some youth isn't a bad idea I don't think the selectors worry too much about age especially when they could have considered the 26yo Inglis over the 30yo Carey so to me it's an indication that age isn't a problem for them.
They're focused on this series and perhaps the next one not 5 years down the track.
Richardson is a sharp and attacking bowler and handy with the bat so he deserves his chance again.
If he gets to bowl in the right conditions he could be a handful.

Cummins in doubt for second Test after COVID close contact designation

A COVID-19 scare has caused chaos within the Australian cricket team just hours before the Adelaide Test, with Pat Cummins identified as a close contact of a positive case.

A source with knowledge of the situation has told the Herald and The Age that Australia’s captain was at an Adelaide restaurant on Wednesday evening, with another professional cricketer, when a patron at the next table was identified as a positive COVID-19 case.

It is understood Cummins and others immediately left the venue and alerted authorities.

It is unclear whether the fast bowler will feature in the second Test, beginning on Thursday afternoon, but one source said it was “unlikely”. If Cummins is ruled out, vice-captain Steve Smith would take his place as skipper.

Cricket Australia did not return the Herald and Age’s calls but sources said it was aware of the issue. The governing body is scrambling to determine whether Cummins can play or not.

That is seriously unlucky, as of yesterday there were fewer than 100 active cases in SA. What was the person doing out at a restaurant whilst waiting on a covid test result?

He's been ruled out. Damn. Smith is going to Captain not sure who's coming in.

                    Edit : It's Neser.

Sounds like someone that was known to him too, hmm a little strange not following the protocols. It's all it takes.

"A patron at the next table" - doesn't sound like the person was know to him. Desperately unlucky in a state with so few cases. If it was Vic or NSW it would be a different story and much riskier.

A lot of pressure on Richardson and Neser to perform and even more on Starc to lead the attack. Hopefully they are up to it.

I read this on the age article (nfi if accurate) :

"The man who received a positive COVID-19 result was known to members of the table Cummins was sitting on"

Fair enough, sketchy details at this point. I guess the full story should be known in time. Whoever it is they best lay low for a while.
