2nd Test Australia v South Africa, MCG Boxing Day 2022
Re: 2nd Test Australia v South Africa, MCG Boxing Day 2022
Jansen and Nortje bowled beautiful either side of lunch. Unfortunately for the Saffers, Rabada has been uncharacteristically rubbish almost the entire innings. Take nothing away from Warner, been a top notch innings.
This series features 3 out of 4 top quality line-ups (Aus batting, Aus bowling and SAF bowling) and 1 putrid, utterly sub-par line-up (SAF batting). They have now gone 7 completed innings without getting to 200 - it's actually as inept and pathetic as test level batting gets. I had a chuckle when the Fox Cricket commentators called Bavuma "South Africa's premier batsman". He would be lucky to make a Sheffield Sheild team, as would all the batsmen in their current squad.

You have to wonder about the sense of playing 5 specialist bowlers when the batting is so suspect. Jansen is very much a bowling all rounder. Their wicket keeper isn't much chop either.
Things could get very ugly for them after tea when the intense heat starts to really take a toll on them. It will be a long session given how many overs they're behind and I would imagine the last 90 minutes is where the batsman can really build a massive lead.

Would they have made many more runs if Van der Dussen for example, who is a very ordinary batsman, was selected at the expense of one of the quicks? Their strength is their bowling, so I think they've actually done the right thing to stack the bowling and give them the best opportunity to get 20 wickets. They simply stink as a batting line-up, which is why they are toiling away on day 2 in 38 degree heat - they left an extra 250 minimum on the table in the 1st innings, on what was a very benign pitch in batting friendly conditions.

You're probably right but it's said that they have some very good young back in SA that haven't been given much of a chance yet.
Janneman Malan averages over 45 in FC and A list games. Aiden Markram has looked a solid test cricketer.
A lot of their contracted players are north of 30 but if they were playing well it wouldn't be an issue.

Calling Bavuma their premier batsman is not dependent on him being good at batting

Doubts that Starc can bowl given his finger injury his bowling hand and now Green with a finger injury to his bowling hand plus the full on cramps with Warner might pose some problems for us. On top of that Smith has the flu.
