Re: Men's ODI World Cup 2023

My sleeping patterns are over the place after a recent OS holiday and this time it worked in my favour as I was able to watch the last 100 runs get peeled off after an early morning wake-up.

Maxi is a member at the golf club I play at it was just like watching him smash the ball off the tee with the ridiculous stroke-play on display when the legs gave way, and it was stand and deliver time. Don't think I've ever seen anyone one with quicker hands thru the ball before... amazing stuff.

Some of Maxwells milestones from last nights innings in the world cup.

He made the most runs ever by a batsman batting at six or lower in an ODI breaking Kapil Dev's record that stood for 40 years.
Only 11 players have made a double hundred in ODI and all of them other than Maxwell were openers.
It was the highest score by any batsman when chasing runs
It was the highest score by any Australian ODI cricketer

There are other standout innings in world cups but none of them were batting 2nd

The most noticeable innings was Kapil Dev who came in at 5 for 17 against Zimbabwe in 1983 and made 175no off 138 deliveries. India made 266.

Maxy is not human. That was crazy.

It's also the first ever ODI double century in a run chase.

I am paying the price for it today, but I watched every ball of that game last night. Finished 1am WST. How do you describe that innings and do it justice? Absolutely incredible.

The same Afghanistan that nearly knocked us for 300 and had us on the ropes at 7/91?

I know what you're saying. But if you slightly discredit Maxwell's innings owing to the opposition then it really paints a bleak picture for the rest of the squad.

I thought the rest of the team were awful and it might be unfortunate that Maxwell's incredible innings papers over the horrendous performance from his teammates. Glen has single handedly saved his teammates arses a number of times now. After the mostly dismal ashes performance where we escaped with a draw, the current national squad has a lot to answer for.

Yeah I know. But he did do it against a team who knocked 7 of our other batsmen out for just 91 runs. What does it say about the rest of the team?

You mean the team playing for a place in the semi final who would currently be sitting 4th if not for our win.

Being against Afghanistan does not devalue the performance.

Afghanistan is a very competitive side in the ODI and T20 formats of cricket and I don't believe there needs to be an * beside Maxwells achievements.

I'm being flippant, however over the course of human history an innings like that hasn't occurred against a first world team. That's evidence enough for me. Still an amazing effort, however he isn't doing that v England from 7 down.

So I do think it has to be taken into consideration.

                            Amazing innings none the less.

Man hit his second hundred exclusively with golf shots while being unable to run singles. It was like watching my dad fill in for the Clifton Hill 6ths except he did it in an international match at 7/90. Of course it’s the best innings ever.

I concur Gary. I've actually been impressed by the standard of performance of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and non-test side Netherlands this World Cup. They're all legitimately professional cricket sides who are capable of performing on the international stage, as their performances have shown this tournament.

I'd be happy to have any of Afghanistan's front-line spinners in our first class set up; Rashid, Mujeeb or Noor. And their batting has some very talented guys coming through as well. Gurbaz & Zadran.

Maxwell is such an enigma. I always have the suspicion that if his development was handled better in his early days (and he probably has accountability too there) he could've been an all format legend of our game by now with well over a decade of regular test cricket under his belt.

Being able to bring out a consistent, top flight performing Maxwell a decade ago could've seen him become a generational game-changer (like a Gilchrist was) by now. That wishful thinking version of Maxwell would've really helped our test team balance on sub continental pitches for the past decade that's for sure.
