I concur Gary. I've actually been impressed by the standard of performance of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and non-test side Netherlands this World Cup. They're all legitimately professional cricket sides who are capable of performing on the international stage, as their performances have shown this tournament.

I'd be happy to have any of Afghanistan's front-line spinners in our first class set up; Rashid, Mujeeb or Noor. And their batting has some very talented guys coming through as well. Gurbaz & Zadran.

Maxwell is such an enigma. I always have the suspicion that if his development was handled better in his early days (and he probably has accountability too there) he could've been an all format legend of our game by now with well over a decade of regular test cricket under his belt.

Being able to bring out a consistent, top flight performing Maxwell a decade ago could've seen him become a generational game-changer (like a Gilchrist was) by now. That wishful thinking version of Maxwell would've really helped our test team balance on sub continental pitches for the past decade that's for sure.

How they couldn't close out a game at 7/90 ish is hard to believe

It's because Maxwell drew a line in the sand and said "not today fellas" and played one of the greatest international innings of all time

I completely agree. Maxwell had/has the talent to be one of the best players of his generation. A player in the mould of Andrew Symons but much, much more talented-a real game changer. For whatever reason though it just didn't happen.

He coulda been a contender!

I disagree with that ... I see him more as an enigma than a flat-track bully. His ability to hit both sides of the body is second-to-none as is his hand-eye coordination. (which is absolutely painful when you are trying to teach kids to use footwork when batting)

For sure. I'd love to see him lose that perception of being a flat track bully.

Let's hope he can turn it on v India or South Africa and play a big part in bringing the cup back to Australia.

I only just watched the highlights/ mini of the Maxwell innings and the guy clocked cricket.

No matter the opposition, the time, the place, he just stood there and used his upper body to flail a world class attack. Nobody will ever do that again. Poor countries, rich countries, first world, third world. Doesn't matter, what he just did was out of control.

Get around it.

Maxwell will be viewed as someone if constrained could have been a test player, if moderated a little might have been more consistent. He wouldn't have done what he did if he wasn't exactly who he is.

Easy win against Bangladesh after they gave a good target to Australia of 306. Mitch Marsh with 177 no was the standout as was Warner with 53 and Smith no 63.
