Australia v West Indies Summer 2024 - Test, ODI and T20

Smith got himself into a huge tangle with that big step across the stumps yesterday. If you look at the point of dismissal, his back foot is a good half-metre outside off-stump, both feet are in the air and he's completely front on. He's always been liable to being squared up on the back foot with how front-on he gets, but it was an awful spot he got himself into.
I think he's become hyper-focused with scoring on the leg-side and he's getting so far across his stumps to create scoring opportunities that it's getting him into trouble. I'd also love to see his 'leave' percentage this summer. Smith at his best leaves the ball a lot - and he would've left that ball yesterday at his best. It forces the bowler to straighten up to him and then creates those leg-side scoring opportunities. The Smith we're seeing today is trying to force those opportunities by walking further and further across his stumps.
I think Smith's tinkering too much at the moment and needs to slow down, simplify things and get back to what made him so good.
The batting coach needs sit down with Smith and have a chat about the way he's playing at the moment. He's shooting himself in the foot with this big step across. I personally don't think it matters if he's batting 1, 4 or 10 - it's a technical issue of his own making.

So is the Smith experiment worth persisting with?
Experiment aside, is Smith getting to the stage where he might not be worth persisting with? He's somehow gotten even more quirky with his movements at the crease.
We didn't feel we needed a specialist opener, we couldn't bring ourselves to replace Marsh with Green when Green recovered and then after Warner retired moved the underdone Green to number 4. I get that we wanted an all-rounder and Marsh is now not much more than a part time bowler.
Marnus also isn't necessarily been getting out to great bowling either all summer.
We've got some batting challenges.

Good to see ICC test cricketer of the year still in. Go Ussi
He's the one batsman that has really applied himself.
Smith dancing around the crease and got caught. Marnus didn't need to play a shot let along poke at one
Head chased a wide one down leg side and Marsh got set-up and fell for the trap and even Carey who was batting well gave the easiest of catches. Ussie is trying to carry the bat and at least get us to a reasonable score.

Going to be tough out in the field today, very hot day with the feels like temp hovering above 40c, would absolutely want to be batting today as the pitch still looks like a belta for batting, going to be some shorter spells for the quicks.
