Green every day of the week but I would certainly prefer to have specialist opening batters than a makeshift batsman who wasn't overly dominating his previous batting position.

3 for 88. We need to get a good partnership out of the remaining batsman rather than having to reply on the tail enders.

Yep, he's out there as a nightwatchman again. Lets hope that Marnus digs deep.

So 4 for 124 and 38 runs behind. We will need a couple of good partnerships to build a decent lead.

Hazelwood needs a lot of credit for the way he's turned things around. It's easy to forget he only played four Tests in 20 due to fitness issues and he's now taken 34 wickets at 13 this summer. That spell yesterday was exceptional - if there's 'just enough' in the wicket, he's the best seamer in world cricket to use those conditions.

He's got out to bad shots all too frequently this summer

I think we need to move on from him. Has he actually ever made runs?

1 century and 7 scores over 50 with a batting average of 29 in 45 test innings means he cemented his spot like he should have.
It's the way he's getting out that is hard to take.

I reckon that's a pretty generous definition of cementing his place. His century was very 'flat-track runs' - he came in at 5/395, Australia was already 200 runs ahead and he belted around a tired South African attack to take Australia to a score of 600... it's not really doing it when the chips are down.

Carey was terrible in India where he averaged 9 and he averaged 22 in the Ashes. Tim Paine copped a lot of flak for his batting but he had a Test career average of 32 versus Carey's now at 29.

He's guilty of the softest dismissals in the top 7 and is incapable of sticking around with an established batsman long enough to form a damaging partnership. We used to lambast Haddin for the mode of his dismissals - Carey's been out far more often shelling them to cover or on the lap sweep than Haddin ever was.

Carey's been very good with the gloves (which he wasn't early in his Test career) and is clearly a 'good bloke', but on form he should be batting below Starc and Cummins at 9, which isn't sustainable for a Test wicket-keeper in 2024. Recency bias too but dropping Latham last night really doesn't help his case and tips the game in New Zealand's favour.

He'll be there for the first Test against India at home next summer, but he deserves as much flak as anyone for his batting performances and his inability to stick around with set batsman.

Well in the eyes of our selectors. I need to start using a sarcasm icon
I just always wonder of our selections are largely based on popularity within the team.

I'm not sure if Inglis or any other keeper have done enough to earn a promotion but I suspect Carey keeps the job unless he gets injured and opens the door for someone else. He's certainly a good enough batsman but one that often finds ways to cough up his wicket with a rash shot selection.

We were looking a bit dodgy after lunch, particularly Starc, and then Hazelwood, Cummins and Greene have taken three quick wickets. Need to wrap up the innings quickly from here.
                                TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.
