All that bravado that McDonald thought Smith would be a great opener etc gets shut down when a spot in the middle order opens up.
I would have thought it was a chance for them to bring in McSweeney.

I don't think Smith was overly successful as an Opener

He was shocking in the small sample size. It was done more about keeping him in the Australian 12 and Bancroft out of it.

So who does open? Will it be Bancroft, Harris or Renshaw? Talk up here about Konstas. He has potential but to throw him in against Bumrah. No. Think it is typical NSW talk that our cricketers are better than the rest of the country (a load of hogwash and matters not what state a player comes from once they put on the baggy green).

I would like to see Bancroft given another opportunity. Mind you he got a pair in the 1st shield game of the season. Probably rules him out.

If Bancroft had made runs in his first Shield game then he might be in the mix but I suspect he;s not really going to be selected.
Look like Harris has gotten off to the quickest start.

Given he got 140 I can’t see it any other way. Perfect timing really.

I think we can rule Renshaw out - he didn't even make the Australia A squad.

Other than Harris, Bancroft and Konstas some non openers have also been floated with Marsh, Head or Marnus pushing up to open. McSweeney, Hardie and Webster are the names I have seen mentioned. The all rounders in Hardie and Webster might be a chance later in the series to lighten the load on the bowlers if Marsh isn't able to provide enough support with the ball.

Hardie is going to miss some cricket with a quad injury I believe. McSweeney should really be considered and Webster a genuine chance. Marsh has really cut back with his bowling.

I assumed this must have been a green top in NZ for India to be bowled out for 46, but no, at home in India. Why don't they ever prepare (doctor) pitches like that when we play there instead of slow dust bowls that turn square on day 1?

Henry Hunt has pushed his case forward with a good ton against Queensland in a tough Shield round for batters. I don't think his record stacks up but it's a good time to be in form.

Konstas not the first person to be undone by a Scott Boland MCG in-swinger, but it was a really rough decision.

Harris had a really nice tussle with Mitch Starc who eventually got him down the leg-side. Certainly fun to watch though, I thought Starc bowled beautifully and looks in excellent rhythm.

Bancroft will be batting today and needs some runs to stay in the conversation. Aaron Hardie is playing and bowled 6 overs in the first innings, Mitch Marsh still yet to take the ball.

Was Smith out vs the vics yesterday? Looked plumb to me.
