Players from Yesteryear you'd love to see play Twenty20

I saw him hit DK Lillee for 6 with a one handed swat over square leg at the MCG once. The next ball Lillee bowled at him bounced three times before it got to him and G Chappell asked him what he thought he was doing. Lillee said "**** him-if he isnt going to bat properly then I'm not going to bowl properly"
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Now how would a captain like G Chappell react to that?
That would have been gold to see.

Ken ****ing Barrington??? WTF???
Didn't he bat through an entire day and make about 40? I remember seeing him bat on ABC2's Late Night Legends and batted like Chris Tavare on Valium.
Ted Dexter was a ripper, though! He had a dip.
One of the greatest players to ever play the game. Had a Test average in the high 50's and against Australia 60+
Great players like Barrington, Boycott and Lawry whilst being slow in Test cricket, modified their style to score runs quickly in limited overs games and would have no trouble hitting boundaries on 20/20 pitches with field restrictions. Similar to Hodge who scores most of his runs by boundaries rather than hitting over the top

Lawry started as quite a flowing left handed shot maker who scored reasonably quickly before deciding to bunker down and let his partner play the big shots.

I remember reading about a bloke from the late 1800s called George Bonnor, whose batting technique essentially involved hitting the ball as hard and as far as possible. He also won a bet with a passenger on a ship to England that he could throw a cricket ball 100 yards.

He didnt just throw it 100 yards, he did it the moment he stepped off the boat at Cairo or Southampton or whever without warming up at all.
He was a strange puppy that Bonner, he developed a phobia about one of the English slow bowlers (Peel I think) and kept himself and his roommate awake all night before one innings against him playing imaginary shots and bellowing "Cop that Peel!" and such like. I cant help thinking he would have been a lot better off just sleeping.

It was Southampton.
Good to know even in the early days there were blokes who thought fine strokeplay and finesse were overrated.

And sleeping evidently...
Australia had a policy of picking a 'hitter' in their teams in the days before covered wickets. The theory was that if the wicket deteriorated really badly then all the finesse in the World wasnt going to help as much as someone who could just smash across the line and get runs quickly. Percy McDonnell was another one.
