Re: Scottish Football Thread
This result hasn't really surprised the international footballing public -- Scottish football has been going backwards at a rate of knots for a while now (well, relative to the rest of the footballing world), especially in terms of tactical development. The SPL is a league in which a sweeper is seen as a tactical masterstroke and where Walter Smith is some sort of organisational genius (!), so the fluid 4-2-3-1 (sometimes 4-6-0!) that Braga play must have seemed like something out of Aliens, especially compared to the usual dross served up by the likes of Aberdeen or Dundee. (Hey, I go for Sheffield Wednesday so I really know what dross on a football pitch looks like.)
The big two could still compete simply by buying more and more EPL cast-offs, but it was only a matter of time before brain would overcome sheer spending power.
Update:
I've just done a quick survey of the news reports on this match. In the Latin countries this was an expected result -- a basic slow-the-tempo-down away game where they soaked up Celtic's standard high-energy running (that for all that had 0 shots on target), capitalised on their few chances with high-level technical expertise (a direct free kick, a well taken corner).
In the British press, however, it was seen as some sort of Celtic meltdown against 'mediocre' continental opposition, with a crappy referee to blame and bad player selections. A typical reaction, and symptomatic of the shallow understanding of football at the highest levels in the 21st century in the British media -- mistaking slow tempo for mediocrity (you need a high level of technical proficiency to keep possession while slowing the game down), and overemphasising individual player selections rather than how these players fit into an overall structure. The quality of English language analysis available often leaves me in despair: while the rest of the world celebrate the brains of a generation of Xavis and Iniestas, much of the English and Scottish media don't seem to have moved on philosophically from the muscular naivety of the era of Stanley Matthews and Nat Lofthouse.Comment

Re: Scottish Football Thread
But yeah, UK football media = sad. Not so long ago there was a Daily Mail headline about the FIFA World Player of the Year Award that read something like: "The Best Players in the World (and Xavi)". Breathtaking ignorance. Only Sir Alex (who has joked that he's sure he saw Xavi give the ball away once), Martin O'Neill, Roy Hodgson, and to a lesser extent David Moyes and Harry Redknapp can hold their head up in this brave new world.Comment

Europa League results.
NK Maribor 3-0 Hibernian
Aalesunds FK 1-1 Motherwell
Motherwell were able to get a draw away from home, thanks to a early strike from Jamie Murphy.
Hib's are in real trouble, with that devastating 3-0 loss.Comment

Celtic, despite winning the return leg 2-1 have crashed out of the Champions League 4-2 on aggregate.85, 92, 97, 98, 08, 09, 10... Break the curse!Comment

Re: Scottish Football Thread
And now Celtic have crashed out of the Europa Cup at the Qualifying stages. Despite a 2-0 home leg lead, they were hammered 4-0 in Vienna to bow out without a whimper.85, 92, 97, 98, 08, 09, 10... Break the curse!Comment

Re: Scottish Football Thread
Thanks for the update TCD. I guess while the rest of Europe has strengthened its leagues, the Scottish League has stayed stagnent.
Or I will just wait for Lantern to come in with his facts and prove me totally wrong!Comment
