    2009 Ashes Squad

Live cricket coverage, live streaming, cricket highlights, live scores, breaking news, video, analysis and expert opinion.

    Just been released squad is:
Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Stuart Clark, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, Phillip Hughes, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Graham Manou, Andrew McDonald, Marcus North, Peter Siddle, Shane Watson.

No major suprises, Symonds is the biggest ommision but I didnt think they would take a back up keeper.

I love the asterisks next to Watson's name

    (* Subject to fitness)

We all know Watson will break down in the first over and Symonds will get a recall

Won't even make the touring party as he breaks down in training.

On another matter, are they playing funny buggers with Brad Hodge? What's the point of putting him on an ACB contract and not pick him for any squads, not even the 20/20 one, where he is easily one of the best players in the world in that format?

Graham Manou..... **** me. What a complete waste of a spot, if Haddin gets injured put the call in for a replacement.

No depth in the top order batting, if Hussey fails in the first 2 tests he has to be replaced, but by whom?

Paine wouldve been my choice, closely followed by Wade who had an extraordinary end to the shield season.

Have to be Watson, fairly sound batsmen, very capable of batting in the top 6. I cant believe Ferguson isnt in the party though. Which aussie batsmen are playing county cricket and ready to be called upon if required?

Ferguson - 1st class average is 35.95, he averaged 42.9 (644 runs) in the 08/09 SS.

Watson - 1st class average is 45.00, he averaged 38.42 (269 runs) in the 08/09 SS

Both Hodge & Klinger deserve to be in the touring squad before these 2.

In my mind you should take only 2 of North, McDonald & Watson as well.

The selectors were too weak as piss to make a decision.

Lee gets in based on T20 form. FFS, when was the last time he bowled more than a 2 over spell?

Lee took 20 wickets @ 41 in our last Ashes camapiagn in 05 when he was supposedly our 'main strike bowler'. I wonder how he will go now that he is a washed up hack.

I though McGrath would still have owned that mantle at that point in time?

Completely agree with overall point however.

Lee, Clark, Hilf, Siddle, Johnson and Hauritz means 6 bowlers together with 2 capable bowling allrounders in Mcdonald and Watson but not one back up batsman.
One of Clark or Lee should not be there, Lee should have been the one to miss out.

What are we going to do with 5 fast bowlers? Someone is going to have a nice holiday watching the cricket.

McGrath would've been except he injured himself on the eve of the first test match, therefore Lee had to be the number 1 bowler rather than number 2.

Disagree on Klinger. He's only had one good season thus far in his career, and there is nothing that says to me, when compared with the three other players mentioned, that his success will translate.

Averages aside, Watson can bowl, Hodge has done it before at the level and Ferguson was debatably our best ODI bat over the summer.

I would have all three in ahead of Klinger, and lose McDonald from the all-rounders. He just isn't very good.
