To me if McDonald is to play then it needs to be as the 5th bowler batting him at 6 or 7.

Clark has to be able to do a better job at tying up and end and potentially getting a few wickets than McDonald would.
McDonald has bowled as tightly as Clark in his test career so far.

    McDonald can bat, Clark can't.
Clark has barely bowled for a year and is currently bowling pies.

You'd be better off playing McDonald.

Having Clark sitting in the stands won't get him match fit either. Out of both Clark and McDonald the guy that will most likely get a 3 for is Clark so that's why I would pick him.
The Poms have been raised on medium pacers like McDonald and I think Clark has the far better pedigree to get wickets in English conditions than Macca.
I even think Hilfenhaus would be a better selection than McDonald at the moment because we shouldn't need more batting depth if we have Haddin at 7, Johnson at 8 and Lee at 9.

McDonald worked well in SA but if we are to play 4 quicks against the Poms then we need to play 4 wicket takers.

Cardiff may be a dust bowl but the local english spinners have averaged over 40 there this season.

Lee was picked in the squad cos he is mates with 'someone'.
Sorry I didnt realise you had inside knowledge , after Hauritz's performance so far he is no chance of playing in the first test. Clark will play if their is the remotest chance he wont he will be replaced by Hilfenhaus. And I guess Lee's 'mate' must know something about cricket after his performance.

Lee has a history of beating up second raters and then failing miserably when faced with decent batting.

That reverse swing he generated last night is going to trouble any batsmen

No need to patronise, its obvious to everyone but you that Lee was picked cause he was one of the boys given his lack of form/ fitness over the past 2 years and in England.
I hope Lee does bowl well but he hasn't proven anything yet. This game is not a test match.

Or bowls his usual quota of no balls.

If he strays and bowls loose, he is going to get belted all over the park, one of the problems to me, is that he has been told in the past, to just bowl as fast as he can, i believe Ponting is one that has pushed that onto him, just bowl quick, thats all good & well if he's in the zone.

If he bowls like he does the other night, yeah it was against a second rate batting line up, but he had full control of the ball, he was "in the zone", and a bowler at his pace, bowling crap half volleys or short shit, he'll be belted, but to keep it on line and get more of that reverse, then he's going to be a wildcard for us imo, what he was bowling the other night would have troubled the best batsmen.

Thats part of the reason i'd be keeping him as a second or third change bowling option rather than giving him the new pill, if he strays with the new ball, the Poms are going to have a field day.

Who would you have preffered to be picked?

                        A batsman.
Only of 2 of Clark, Lee and Watson.
