Re: Yankees win 27th World Series

The bloody Yankees have done it again, you can make it 28 now.

It is indeed a dark day for Detroit fans. With the economic crisis effecting the city of Detroit the owners have decided to have a fire sale. Out: Polanco (Phillies) Jackson (Arizona) Curtis Granderson (YANKEES) IN: KIDS. Granderson is the fans favourite, its like trading Brad Johnson in his prime to Collingwood. That is 3 out of the tigers best 5 gone.

This bloody Yankees team is now even better, what a line up.Comment

Re: Yankees win 27th World Series

Well yes the Yanks have improved and Granderson is supposedly a great locker room guy. To compare Granderson to Johnno is probably a bit much. Believe me I'm a Cubs fan so I've been watching what happened with Granderson closely. He's a solid fielder with power but also this season had an average On-base percentage and struggles with left handed pitching. Detroit are paying the price for bad contracts. Though well intentioned they let Magglio Ordonez reach enough plate appearances to trigger an $18 million option. Cutting him loose would have avoided the current situation. They also have poor contracts for Dontrelle Willis as well as a few others. On the upside Scherzer apparently could put up the same numbers as Jackson, Austin Jackson won't replace Granderson numbers wise but has the inside track to be their starting CF and Coke is a solid lefty reliever. Yes the Yanks are better but it was a pretty good deal all around considering the circumstances. The bloody Yankees have done it again, you can make it 28 now.

I'm also a Detroit lions fan so I understand what's happened with Detroit sports. The economy locally has shrunk and the teams are being affected. Not to mention the fact the Lions have sucked forever.
Anyway there's plenty of off-season left for other teams to improve. The Mariners in particular are spending money and hopefully will lock up some talent. The Red Sox will keep close and the Phillies are in the market for Roy Halladay. Baseball season's are long and while the Yanks will probably be there a lot can happen.Park that car

Your right the tigers are paying big time for outrageous contracts for duds like Bonderman, Robertson & Willis. Big mistake not offering Polanco arbitration he was never going to stay & we would of got some handy picks out of it. I'm not concerned about Ordonez he was on fire after the All Star break.Well yes the Yanks have improved and Granderson is supposedly a great locker room guy. Granderson did have his struggles at the plate against lefties but 30 HR & 70+ RBI are not easy to find. Granderson would be in Detroits top 3 players so the Johno comparison wouldn't be that far off as Johno at his best was still behind Grant & West. I just wonder how are they going to hold on to Justin Verlander when he is eligible for free agency soon.

The Yankees have the best batting line up in baseball & they could do with another pitcher or 2 but thats it. I'm sure the Yankees haven't finished shopping yet. The Red Sox have to do some spending if they want to compete with NY.

Cubs fan, gee your a sucker for punishment they have worst record than our beloved doggies. One thing about the cubs is its always entertaining watching Soriano in the field.
Are the cubs making any moves?Comment

Re: Yankees win 27th World Series

Upside for the Tigers is next year they have Willis, Ordonez, Bonderman and Robertson coming off the payroll which is like $40million plus so they'll be able to keep competitive in the free agent market and pay Verlander. Listening to the ESPN Baseball Today Podcast they were positively effusive about the arms the Tigers had brought in citing Scherzer as a possible no 1 and Schlereth as a possible future closer with 100mph speed on his fastball. They've still got Verlander and Porcello their too. Plus Coke is a solid reliever.Your right the tigers are paying big time for outrageous contracts for duds like Bonderman, Robertson & Willis. As for the Cubs, they whiffed on Granderson, didn't offer arbitration to Harden who has signed with the Rangers (pending a physical), can't find anyone who'll take Milton Bradley off their hands without the Cubs picking up the $21 million he's owed and their is talk of them picking up Mike Cameron to play CF, who's 37. Essentially they won't be able to do anything big until Bradley is traded out.Park that car

I don't think money will be the issue with Justin more so a winning team. He is such a competitor and if the tigers don't have winning team I'm worried he will head to the Bronx.Upside for the Tigers is next year they have Willis, Ordonez, Bonderman and Robertson coming off the payroll which is like $40million plus so they'll be able to keep competitive in the free agent market and pay Verlander. I have also heard & read all the hype surrounding the kids & it does get me excited but when I think about what we have lost I just can't see the tigs put up a challenge for the division. The biggest loss is Polanco what a player, Scott Sizemore has massive shoes to fill.Comment

Unfortunately in baseball with no salary cap the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Terrible sad to see the tiges having a clear out and feathering the Evil empires nest. See the mets are making noises about acquiring one of the Mollina's [there's about 10 of them]I'm sure they'll sign big names who get injured or lose form {cue Oliver Perez] Comment

They've made an offer for Jason Bay. We'll see if he's sane or not. Re: Yankees win 27th World Series

Great news with Justin signing a long term contract thats bigger than king felix. He will be a tiger for along time yet.

Been reading reports that the tigers are chasing Johnny Damon from the Yankees. It seem s most tigers fans think he is way past his prime & don't want him wearing the old english D. Altough we need a leadoff hitter it seems odd that with all the salary cuts they have been making they would offer Damon a 2 year $14 million contract.

Well Underdog it seems you got your wish and Bradley was shipped off to Seattle. Not sure your wish would of involved Carlos Silva coming the other way though.

How do you see the Cubs off season signings and how do you see their season unfolding?Comment

Re: Yankees win 27th World Series

Frankly they spent this off-season undoing last off-season.
Silva is the cross they have to bear. He'll be lucky to make the roster for any reason other than the money they have to pay him.

Not convinced about Byrd in CF, as either a hitter or roaming the middle of the outfield but we'll see. Hopefully he takes to Wrigley like he did Arlington last year.
I like the Nady signing, 1 year, minimal risk with a possible huge pay-off.
Would have liked them to hold onto Harden but he was injury prone. Think trading Fox was disappointing but there really wasn't a position for him. He'll do well in Oakland, playing 1st/DH. Grey could be a good middle relief guy.
Still not convinced by Marmol as a closer, he walks way too many.

In summary, everything that could go wrong last year did. Hopefully if Ramirez stays healthy, Zambrano and Soto are back to what they were and Lee can keep it up for another year they'll win 90. It's a weak division so that could be enough. the potential is there to go either way.Park that car
