Re: Victorian bowler Dirk Nannes calls it a day

GVGjr, I agree with this in principle, by and large, especially for the younger players coming through looking for a quick buck but using the state facilities etc. to put themselves in the shop window. They would clearly be mercenaries, and should be given the short shrift.Let them go and play IPL cricket if that is their preference but don't provide them with the training and practice facilities and the chance to stay sharp for the IPL by giving them games especially if we have more eager players waiting in the wings.

It should be one of the great honors to represent your state and national sides and I can understand if players need to put their finances ahead of that but they are breaking their contracts and I think there should be a price to pay for that.

Neither Hodge nor Nannes fit that category though. Hodge, especially, would have done as much for his state over the 15 or so years of his first class career as it has done for him, so surely we can't begrudge him the use of the facilities, and I would also suggest that the continual picking of him in the T20 state side actually benefits the state (and youngsters coming through) as much (if not more) than Hodgey personally.

There is a significant difference between loyal servants wisely maximising one's earning potential towards the end of their career, and self-absorbed parasitic mercenaries and I don't think they should be lumped together.Comment

 Agree 100%.

For youngsters coming through, playing alongside and against the better older players development wise can only be a good thing, it also strengthens up the comp and teams.

It also keeps the comp alot stronger imo, therefor creating a better enviroment for players coming through, playing with and against quality players that may be on the fringe of international duties [Brad Hodge], therefor that next step may not be so great for players getting an opportunity to play for Australia.

I would fear that if these players were not considered being selected after wanting to cash in somewhat, would only bring down the overall quality of Australian cricket, like you see generally with young AFL sides, they really struggle, they may to get a point of being competitive, but how long would that take?Comment

Are you talking about the IPL? From memory NSW didn't play any part timers in the IPL tournament and from what I can recall Nannes didn't play for Victoria as he was playing for another side.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

My point is that these guys should finish the contract that they originally agreed to and then re-negotiate the following season. I have the utmost respect for what Hodge in particular has done for the Vics but he left us mid season. If we had guys knocking on the door for FRC and T20 games regardless of Hodges tenure I don't think he should be played ahead of them. (Mind you we don't have a lot of players knocking the door down but it would have been a shame to see someone like Finch dropped)GVGjr, I agree with this in principle, by and large, especially for the younger players coming through looking for a quick buck but using the state facilities etc. to put themselves in the shop window. I think the critical difference between my views and almost everyone else is that I don't really care if we win T20 games and I want them to be used to develop potential Shield cricketers.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Yeah the champions league thing. No they didn't but if Warner said he will only play T20 and FRC you wouldn't play him in that tournament and NSW wouldn't win it and would rob themselves of 3m.Comment

I see GVGs point about signing for the year then not seeing the year through.
Retiring before the end of the year should only be for health , family of injury you would think.
Going off to play other competitions if in the same format as you have just retired from your state is a bit rude.
Must be some sort of get out clause in contract, maybe its called international duties or you can leave if picked in a higher grade?Bring back the biffComment

Another article about Nannes choising IPL over Shield.FAST bowler Dirk Nannes yesterday became the second Victorian star to retire from first class cricket this season.

Just four weeks away from the the Bushrangers possibly playing in a second successive Sheffield Shield final, the 33-year-old Nannes has joined batsman Brad Hodge in calling it quits from the longer form of the game.
