And D.Huss should have been given more time in the team.
I agree that we have overeacted with a few of the retirements, especially the spinner situation but we will have to agree to disagree on Hussey. Has 23 ODI's under his belt with an average at 28.47, take away his single century against Scotland and his average falls too 24.35. He has never been not out at the end of an innings and has regularly batted top 4/5 in situations where runs were required and failed.
His first class average cannot be denied but that has been padded with years in county cricket and batting at 5/6 for Victoria though he has recently moved to 4 I would like to see him at 3 as he is the class batter in the lineup against the new ball. At this stage I think there are better options around and his time may have passed him by at 33.

So if he played for red ink and protected his average he would be a success?

That's the reason ODI results are meaningless with regards to test selection.

Sorry your logic alludes me, you talk about one day cricket as simply being 'tap it out to deep cover' but Hussey has been presented with ample opportunities where runs were needed, pressures on representing your country and he has failed to deliver. That international average cant be ignored and I'm not sure a 33 year old debutant is a good decision for the future of the team.

My point being, if he throws his bat and gets out at the death, his average suffers - your excuse for him not getting picked in tests. If he played more cautiously late in games, scored fewer runs but didn't get out, he would have a better average and a stronger case to get picked in tests.
