I found these stats in the Age and I think they go along way to highlighting Pietersen's struggles against left arm orthodx spin:
"The selectors would also have noted Pietersen's dismal record against left-arm orthodox finger spinners.
The batting brute has been dismissed 17 times against this type of bowling in his 66-Test career, 15 times in one-day internationals and six times in Twenty20 internationals.
Bangladesh pair Abdul Razzaq and Shakib Al Hasan combined to dismiss him six times in five internationals on the tour there in March this year, while India's Yuvraj Singh, who has a Test bowling average of 53.87, has dismissed Pietersen five times at international level."

I think playing Doherty begins to put doubt into Pietersens mind, an advantage Punter and Doherty can play on

If Australia is going to pick a side on one english batsman who has been struggling to even get a game recently they would be silly.
Wouldnt they be worried more about the blokes getting runs?

If Doherty and Hauritz are neck and neck as spinners anyway, why not go for the bloke who may trouble one of Englands key batsmen the most?

In saying that Hauritz deserved first crack, record in Australia is fine and he was good last Ashes.

I agree that Haurtiz shouldn't have been dropped but if we must then Doherty is the better options than Smith. O'Keeffe the next man into the side?

Has Doherty actually done anything to deserve this call up or have the selectors been swept away by one good limited overs game by a limited overs specialist? Has he done particularly well at shield level recently as his first class bowling average is woeful and he's only got 4 or more wickets 5 times.

Maybe he was a couple of years ago but I think there are a few others who are bigger keys than him now.
Do you think Australian selectors will pick a bowler who is MAYBE capable of getting a batsman who is probably third or fourth best bat in the side?
I personally think you should pick a team on the pitch conditions you are playing on unless you have another Shane Warne.(and Australia doesnt)

I think there is a chance they want to go into the game with Johnson, Siddle and Hilfenhaus and have the 4th bowler split between Watson and Smith. North can also provide a few overs. This would then allow for the extra batting depth.
It would be the wrong way to go in my opinion.

Yeah, I agree.

Hopefully Doherty plays as one of Petersen's weaknesses is left arm off spin and he is the key to the Poms batting IMO.

Real shame some of the younger guys didn't get runs in the Aus A match. They'd have known that was their chance - they were under pressure to perform, and they didn't. Would be ideal for someone to really force the selectors hand through form.
