          My team would be

          Hobbs
          Gavaskar
          Bradman
          Tendulkar
          Pollock
          Sobers
          Gilchrist
          Marshall
          Warne
          Akram
          Lilee

I think that Harold Larwood and is pretty unlucky to miss out on the shortlist an frankly I'm stunned that Kumar Sangakkara isnt on the list of wicketkeepers.

The longer I look at this team the more and moire convinced I get that I should find a place for Sydney Barnes. 27 matches 189 wickets at 16.29. That's a phenomenal record on so many fronts. Economy(less than 2 runs an over), strike rate (7 wickets a match), average(16.20) are all impressive KPIs.

Who do I leave out though? I want a left arm fast bowler so Akram is safe. Unless Barnes was a left armer too.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

He should be in the side and whilst I rate Akram as almost the best bowler I have seen if you are worried about not having a left hander perhaps having the luxury of Sobers batting at 6 and more than good bowler himself should ease the pain.

Does the almost unthinkable idea of replacing Lillee with Barnes come into play?

FWIW, with the quality of batting in the top 6 wouldn't Knott be the better option as the keeper especially with Marshall and Akram to follow?

How do you judge players that played nearly a 100 years back? Eg. What were the opposition and pitches like?

If you are picking on averages alone I understand but I don't think that's always gives you the better player ie warne vs murali

It just so hard, a guy like Victor Trumper is a prime example, had undoubtedly the best average of his day, have heard him compared favourably with Bradman yet averaged less then 40. Not much you can do sometimes except look at the pure record in comparison to the time frame, I dont think we can just discount these cricketers.

Trumper and Barnes played on uncovered pitches and with it being much more difficult to be out LBW

but they didn't face a barrage from Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Mal Marshall, Michael Holding, Curtly Ambrose, Coutrney Walsh etc

With the way pitches are prepared nowadays, all the older players batting wise would be better than the 70s on, as for the bowlers well the opposite applies as wickets are better to bat on.
Batsman uncovered pitches harder to bat on.
Bowlers, uncovered pitches, ball will do wierd things off the pitch, thus more wickets.

New balls too. I'm pretty sure that Barnes and co would have bowled with the same old ball right through the innings.

When did the new ball law come in? I've googled it and have been trying to find out but I cant. Doe's anyone know?

Yes Virender Sehwag is the second greatest opening batsmen of all time. For sure.
