    Andrew Hilditch sacked

Scott Spits and Jon Pierik - SMH - 19/08

Cricket Australia has overhauled its selection and coaching procedures in the wake of a report from Don Argus recommending sweeping changes to Australian cricket.

The national body has decided to introduce a five-man selection panel, with the chief selector to work in a full-time capacity.

It means chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditchhas lost his job as part of a wide-ranging review into Australian cricket.

Hilditch, a lawyer, will not fill that role because of work commitments, but could apply for one of the part-time positions.

So a six month (?) review found what everyone in the country not named Andrew Hilditch already knew.

The study has failed to examine the real issue in Austrlian cricket and that is the constitution and structure of the Board.

How can it be in this day and age that Queensland, NSW, Vic and SA must have more representatives on the Board than WA and Tasmania?

How can it be in this day and age that Board represenation must come from member Associations ie the States - imagine the lobbying that goes on there.

Like the AFL, the clubs (states) should be removed from the Board and the Board members selected on the basis of their skills and competence. My observation over the years is that there have been a number of members elected to the Board who you would not put in charge of an under eleven cricket competition mainly because they would fail to turn up sober to meetings.

Not sure how I feel about having the coach and captain on the selection committee, I think the Kiwis have recently gone away from the same model?

Allan Border said in his autopiography that he thinks the coach and captain should by all means be consulted, but should not be on the selection committee.

I agree with him. Let the Coach focus on preparing the team and the captain on leading them. They've got enough to worry about.

If he had any nous about cricket he would had walked last season.
