Marsh has never looked like he belonged at this level, and that was just a terrible dismissal. Khawaja can't possibly have done any worse.
It's always a risk when you pick a player for a test based off something like a T20 score.
I get that we want to settle down the top order but Khawaja looks a player of promise and the right sort of technique to eventually become a good test player.
Ponting needs a score.

That's the stupidity of having the junk food slogathon on instead of first class cricket!
Mind boggling thought process from Sutherland and C/A...
Yet Sutherland waffles on about Test Cricket being a priority, yet there's no 4 dayers to gather form.I think T20 has a place but the timing is just atrocious.I'd dispense with the laborious Tri-serious and have 5 one dayers and have the T20 mid to late Jan to early Feb
Great to see Cowan put a big price on his wicket.
Been crying out for that.
I like players that don't mind batting ugly especially when we have a quick scorer like Warner as the other opener. Cowan needs to keep building on this.

Yep.good to see nice old fashoined cricket. Cowan and warner (what a talent) look like a nice, balanced opening partnership. If the middle order fire they can thank Ed for taking the shine off the new ball... we keep talking about middle order colapses, it wouldn't have helped that hughes was getting out in the 2nd over every innings so fresh bowlers were able to go after the middle order with the new ball. Who cares what Cowan's average is, if he can stay in for 100+ balls every time he sets up the rest of the lineup to make a score. Still mind boggling that it was essentially line ball between cowan and hughes... one's a clearly test technique and temperament player, the other is a loose, inconsistent kid, yet it came down to the Chairmans XI.
Btw, think that Warner is a better long term prospect down the order. Coming in at 5 or so, counter punching the old ball against tired bowlers, he could be an awesome sight. Not to mention what he would do to a loose spinner. The best opener in the country is not playing... i think katich and cowan, with khawaja, then clarke, warner and a fit watson at 6 is precisely the type of mean, old bastard, technically solid test level lineup that will at least ensure that we occupy the crease for long, long periods at a time (but still with the abiliy to counterpunch and score runs), something we're crying out for in our inconsistent performances. Nothing wrong with being bloody hard to beat.
Katich is finished, as been terrible all season for NSW.
I've heard for many many years that no. 3 is the hardest spot to bat in test cricket. Why do we keep putting our youngest players in this spot? By mid next year I'd like to see a line up of Warner, Cowan, Khawaja, Marsh, Clarke, Watson

2 centuries in 6 first class matches and an average close to 40 isn't "terrible all season", especially coming back from injury and the disappointment of his well publicised axing, but i get where you're coming from and don't mind your lineup (although i dont think marsh is up to it longterm). Just think more steel in the top6 in our transitional period is a good idea.
