Your Ashes XI & Ashes Squad Discussion

With the Indian series and the Shield done and dusted, there aren't too many more opportunities for players to put their names forward for selection. I thought it might be interesting to see the team you'd put out for the first test (barring injury), rather than the whole squad you'd take across.

    I would be lining up:

    Khawaja
    Warner
    Hughes
    Clarke
    Burns
    Watson
    Wade
    Pattinson
    Siddle
    Bird
    Lyon

    12th Harris

I'm selecting Watson on the proviso he bowls and plays as a genuine all-rounder at 6 (the selection is probably untenable based on past form I agree). Cowan goes out of the XI and Khawaja goes back to the spot he has played in the majority of his life. I wanted Harris in the XI but Bird was terrific over here and should be well suited to England, he offers something a bit different to the others while Patto and Harris are fairly similar bowlers. Hughes is probably a bit controversial but I think he is still a super talent.

    The Australian Ashes squad is:

    Michael Clarke (C)
    Brad Haddin (VC)
    Jackson Bird
    Ed Cowan
    James Faulkner
    Ryan Harris
    Phil Hughes
    Usman Khawaja
    Nathan Lyon
    James Pattinson
    Chris Rogers
    Peter Siddle
    Mitchell Starc
    Matthew Wade
    David Warner
    Shane Watson

Lemmon, surely there are other batting options than the blokes who went to India and failed miserably?

I don't mind the look of this but Khawaja has a bit to prove with his application to the game and I also think he is better suited to the middle order. I'd just about have Smith in the side at 6 before Watson.

If Watson is bowling then I might be talked into using him as the opener but his performance and results of late and his recent attitude makes it very hard for me to consider him and I've typically been supportive of him.

In a perfect world most of these guys would be out of the side I admit that but the cupboard is terribly bare

So Ed Cowan who was next best batsman after Clarke is the one every one wants to chop.

Ryan Harris certainly worth a shot if he pulled up ok from the shield final.

James Faulkner needs consideration. He looks the best all rounder option.

            Warner
            Cowan
            Hughes
            Clarke
            Smith
            Wade
            Faulkner
            Siddle
            Pattinson
            Harris
            Lyon

Probably need a few fast bowling options and I would like to see them play a few games in England just to see who uses the conditions. We also have the issue of having enough of them fit to play.

6 batsman make a big difference. I don't mind the look of it at all.

Bailey hit a 90 odd and Cowan a 60 on the opening day of the County Comp. Late run for the squad perhaps?

So we have all forgotten who was picked by the time the tour comes around?

Reports today have Haddin as VC... What a huge step backwards if that's the case.

Whispers that S Marsh may be selected as well which is just as ridiculous

                              Matthew Wade
                              David Warner
                              Shane Watson

                              ---

Rogers is a bit of a surprsie, but his numbers stack up.

Haddin named as VC.. as a keeper/ batsman or just batsman... Interesting times ahead.
