    CA contract list

    Players winning contracts are:

George Bailey, Michael Clarke, Ed Cowan, Patrick Cummins, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Phillip Hughes, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Shane Watson

Notable absentees are Khawaja, Bird, Henriques and Smith. Maxwell gets a nod (why?) as does Cummins and the selection of Harris and Haddin probably show they'll be in a few touring parties.

Bird is stiff, Maxwell and Cummins can consider themselves very fortunate.

Good old CA, just couldn't let Haddin go without one last superannuation top up. Pathetic. Even if he gets a couple of games due to injury/rotation, surely there's more benefiting candidates for a contract.

Maxwell is the 8th best spinner and 50th best batsman in the country and gets a contract

I think the problem with the contracts is that they have negotiated a deal with the players association that guarantees contracts on the basis of games played among other things.

Maxwell gets a contract because he has played in 3 forms of the game regardles of his performances.
Haddin probably got his because the test in India gave him enough qualifying points when added to the other matches in whatever period was relevant.

No fans seem to be picking Hilfenhaus for England but he gets a contract and Doherty is surely just a limited overs player from now on.

These contracts are not handed out by the selectors on my understanding .

I don't think that's true in regards to being contracted for the next year, if it were, Henriques three tests during the Indian season accrued enough points but he still missed out. I think the way it works is the initial 17-20 contracted players are those selected by the selectors but players are able to force their way into a contract throughout the year by weight of games.

Happy to be corrected but thats my understanding of it

Pretty sure there is a ranking system in place that certainly weights things against occasional test players in favour of those picked in multiple formats.

Perhaps the selectors may top up the list.

I wouldn't have offered contracts or had the following players just on the base amount:
Johnson, Hilfenhaus, Harris, McKay and Watson. I wouldn't offer a contract to Maxwell but given he is playing all versions of the game I can see why they have.

I would have given a contract to Bird and maybe Smith.

Keep two spots open to promote the best of the bowlers (much like the Dogs did with Goodes)

I think you're right in regards to overall earnings, its why Watson had such a massive payout a few years back but if we are talking about the automatic upgrade a player can receive during the year I think test match selection is looked on quite fondly.

"To secure a CA deal, a player must accrue 12 points, with five allocated for a Test match, two for a one-day international and one for Twenty20."

That puts Rob Quiney on the cusp of a CA contract, I still think its weighted heavily towards test match players.

These initial selections must not be based on games played in the last year or Henriques would be an automatic selection having accrued 15 points.

They are also limited to 20 players on contracts. That makes it difficult with so many players having had a game somewhere over the last 12 months.

It was revealed on the news that Mitchell Starc is now one of the top 5 highest earners with the release of the new contracts.. All this for a guy who isn't even a lock for our best test team.

                      Smith GVGjr?

He isn't good at either batting or bowling.

He still has an upside to his game. If Hughes can get back into the good books I think there is a good chance that Smith can.

His effort in the last test suggested he can actually bat.

                            Reduced list today:

                            Marsh & Hughes noticeable ins

                            Doolan & Wade noticeable outs

                            No spinners other than Lyon.

Sorry I don't mean to call you out BR, but hasn't the world changed in the past 12 months. Smith looks for all intents and purposes our next Test captain now, but at the time your view was totally reasonable.
