    No spinners other than Lyon.
Apparently they are using a points system to hand out contracts - 12 points you get one.

    Tests (playing) - 5
    ODI - 2
    T20 - 1

Doolan is on 10 points as he played 2 tests, but is the incumbent no.3 (according MC) and once he gets to 12 points his contract will be up-graded.

I thought that was the system used throughout the year that deems when upgrades are given? Doolan actually played 3 tests in South Africa so would be on 15 points

What about just picking the best players? I don't understand the need for everybody, and sports, like the AFL match review panel to need to be have an inflexible 'objective' points based system. A black and white system in a grey world is not always the best system.

The initial selection of players is solely objective, this first round of contracts is dictated by the selection panel solely on who they want to have contracted. Players then not selected in the initial batch are able to gain promotion to the contracted list throughout the season by achieving a number of points through selection in a set number of games ie. the points system Mantis alluded to and yes this part is based on data rather than objectivity.

It's why Mitchell Johnson retained his contract last year even though he hardly played, the selectors saw fit to maintain his contract, there was no data to back it up.

Honestly I like the points-based upgrade system that we have in at the moment. It rewards the states for producing Test cricketers. Look at Douggy Bollinger at the moment, lets say Australia played enough games in this T20 World Cup it would mean he automatically is awarded a CA contract and off the NSW books, at least some recompense for missing the Shield Final. That's the main carrot behind it, a player with a CA contract is not paid by his state side but by CA, state teams are afforded some breathing room if an unexpected player is called up at the start of the year and misses most of the season.

Fair enough points, but I think statistics can lie and can change circumstances, that said I'm not losing sleep over it. No second keeper or spinner is intriguing.

Agree it is interesting, shows how wide open both fields are. In terms of the keeper they could legitimately choose probably 4 guys if Haddin went down injured

My impression is that the points system for contracts was negotiated with the Cricketers Association. It does throw up some anomalies but is a reward for playing. It has no influence on forward selections.
