Pakistan - the enigma of World cricket

I've always been fascinated by the Pakis - on any given day they can beat anyone in the world, but they are also liable to lose to Kenya the next day. They always have had so much individual brilliance but rarely gel as a team and have many difficult issues to overcome, not the least of which is not being able to play any home tests, and individuals being susceptible to match fixers because they have been paid so poorly compared to other test nations.

Last night was another example 'good' Pakistan' coming out to play. The 3rd test against Sri Lanka in the UAE was meandering along to a stale and very boring draw (mostly Sri Lanka's doing, who were trying to protect their 1-0 series lead), and Pakistan managed to go at almost a run a ball in the 4th innings to smash over 300 in 2 sessions to win and square the series. They scored almost 200 runs in the final session alone to somehow conjur up a win with 9 balls to spare. This match was very reminiscent of Australia v England at Adelaide in 2006/7, when England completely stopped scoring on the 5th day and opened the door for Australia to blitz them in the final session. Absolutely amazing effort by Pakistan, and done so against some very negative and unsporting tactics by the Lankans - they bowled wide of leg stump and stacked the boundaries for most of the 50 odd overs in the 4th innings.

Such a shame that they don't play any test cricket until their series against us in 9 months' time. I always enjoy watching the Pakis play - they swept England 3-0 when the Poms were top of the tree a couple of years ago and they also managed to win test against the Saffers recently. Unfortunately for them, they will never be able to achieve consistency in their play because of the lack of continuity in their test match schedule.

Its a shame for them with the political issues in Pakistan that no team will tour due to safety issues. This restricts them playing more tests.

What an incredible win. If the boot was on the other foot we'd be suspicious.
They've always had the ability, but application has always been a problem(along with infighting)
Imran Khan seemed to be there only ever true leader, and he talked of infighting with Lahore and Karachi players back in the 70's . Unfortunately ( although inexcusable) they've seen the riches gained by plying the same trade as their arch rivals, and have missed out.

Great thread. I've always admired the way they have produced quality cricketers given their version of the Sheffield Shield is so poor.

I've been a fan of Pakistan cricket since 82 when they came to Australia for the one day series with the West Indies, and although they weren't that great, the likes of Imran, javed, mudassar, moshin, wasim, and zaheer made me attract to them as a playing team. Winning the 92 World Cup was one of my great cricketing highlights..it was the beginning of inzaman

To be a paki fan, as you can imagine, I have to have broad shoulders, and over the years being a bulldogs AND paki supporter I needed balls of steel.

Always follow them with a cricketing passion. Shahid Afridi has brought me much joy (and disappointment) lol.
Have always been a team to blood young guys, and the bowling attack of gul, ajmal, aamer, and asif should've been the best in the world.
I will never see #16 the same!!

            Bump

Pakistan have been at it again today, easily chasing down 380 in the 4th innings on a 5th day dust bowl against Sri Lanka to clinch a test series away from home. They are now the 3rd best test cricketing nation in the world. I'd love to see them tour Australia far more often than they do.

The wicket looked pretty decent still, but the Lankans have one very ordinary attack.

And like any good quality park cricket team, they are led by a canny and street-smart 41 year old

They are currently playing their 5th-7th string pace bowlers and their 3rd string spinner (who happens to be the best leggie in world cricket since Warnie). Their opening batting has always been suspect but they now have some steel in their batting line-up from #3 to #6, with Azhar Ali, Younis, Misbah and Asad Shafiq all long-term mainstays in the current line-up. And they now have Sarfraz, who is the most explosive game-changing keeper-batsman since Gilly at his prime.

They next play England at the UAE later this year - will very much enjoy watching that series.

I remember sitting at school reading the Sun news pictorial I'd bought on the way there and looking up the progress of a West Indies Pakistan test. Pakistan had made 280 odd I think but then threw the new ball to the opening batsman Musassar Nazar and he took 2/7 off four overs (Haynes and Greenidge I think). Talk about your tactical geniuses!

I remember as a wee lad when I first started following the game the likes of Asif iqbal, sadiq Mohammed, mushtaq Mohammed and Wasim Bari. Good cricketers in their day.
